This song is only my all time favorite song, and everyone should hear it at least once in their lives.

Liam Lynch: Fake Songs: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
I almost wet my pants twice listening to this record, during "Fake David Bowie Song" ("Sorry mum, I'm five years late for teatime") and "Fake Pixies Song", where Lynch cold-cocks Black Francis, perfectly imitating his detached bombast: "I didn't mean to get used to you/ But I'm gettin' USED TO YA COLLEEN!!!" Complete genius.
The fake Depeche Mode and Talking Heads songs aren't as precise, however: the former a little too lifeless, the latter as easily passing for a Weezer dig, though he studiously cops Byrne's approach to harmony.
Liam Lynch is as obsessed with music as you are, as literate as most critics-- he knows every word to every song by the bands he's taunting.

Lynch started writing stories and original music when he was 12 and wrote, recorded and produced his first album of original songs by the age of 15.

Throw on top of that the “Fake” songs like the “Fake Bjork Song” (which is amazingly on-point), “Fake David Bowie Song”, and “Fake Pixies Song” and you have an irresistible record.
There is no question that Fake Songs is meant as a joke of sorts and should not be taken too seriously.
The difference is, most of the songs are musically strong enough that (with the lyrical content put aside) if you slipped each of them onto a disc from each genre represented, you would probably be able to pass them off as songs from a reputable artist.

Nathan: No. The cd is divided into two parts, each part mixed into the other: the fake songs, and Liam Lynch's actual efforts at music.
The fake songs are imitations of the styles of various famous artists like David Bowie, Bjork, and The Pixies, him trying to make songs that both encapsulate the ouevre of the artist, and sound like a song they could've actually recorded.

Fans of The Sifl and Olly Show will be familiar with the amusing "United States of Whatever," while others will only think they recognize "Fake Pixies Song," "Fake Depeche Mode Song" and "Fake David Bowie Song." Both satire and homage, the latter is a dead-on impersonation of Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust.
Many years ago, Frank Zappa asked the question "Does Humor Belong in Music?" In the case of Lynch, the answer is still pending.
