Fakenham became the dominant centre when the abbey was abolished by Henry VIII.
Fakenham West station was on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, and closed in 1959.
Fakenham East station was on the Great Eastern Railway and closed in the 1960s, although freight carried on until the 1980s.

Fakenham is a thriving market town with a weekly auction and a regular Farmers Market held on the fourth Saturday of each month.
On the outskirts of the town is Fakenham Race Course, one of the finest rural national hunt courses in the country, with regular point to point meetings as well as other racing events and a firework display in November.
The Fakenham Museum of Gas and Local History is located in the buildings of the town's gasworks and gives an insight into the process by which coal was made and the working conditions of the men who made it.

FAKENHAM is a flourishing and well built market town, pleasantly situated on the north side of the Wensum, 9 miles S. of Wells, 12 miles W.S.W. of Holt, 23 miles E.N.E. of Lynn, 25 miles N.W. by W. of Norwich, 16 miles N.N.E. of Swaffham, and 109 miles N.E. of London.
In the 17th of James I., Fakenham Mill, and a parcel of land, called Hulmore, with a warren, andc., were granted to Edward Ferrars and Fras.
The Fakenham Provident Society was formed in 1795, for the benefit of the widows and orphans of deceased members.

 Norfolk Mills - Fakenham watermill
The main structure of the mill is built of red and yellow brick, whilst the back of the mill, facing upstream, had a section that was primarily cream weatherboard standing in front of the all brick mill.
Fakenham Mill had to run in conjunction with Sculthorpe Mill and Hempton Mill, which both had control of the water further upstream.
Early in the 20th century steam was being used to supplement water and a tall chimney was built on the end of the steam shed that could be seen for some considerable distance.

The name Fakenham we believe is derived from the Saxon name Fair place by the river and dates back to the end of the 6th century, when Saxons decided to settle near the original course of the River Wensum.
By the time of the Domesday Book there were over 100 people living in Fakenham and by the middle of the 13th century the town was far more important and had been granted a charter for a market which it holds to this day.
The railway arrived in Fakenham in 1849 with the line running north from Dereham, an east-west line arrived in 1880 and Fakenham Station was built, one platform from this station can still be seen.
