Falcatifolium australisD.R.Greenwood from Middle Eocene sediments in Victoria bears littleresemblance to extant species in the genus and is transferred to the newfossil genus Sigmaphyllum R.S.Hill & L.J.Scriven.Specimens from Early Oligocene sediments in Tasmania previously assigned toFalcatifolium are described as a second species ofSigmaphyllum, S.
tasmanensisR.S.Hill & L.J.Scriven, and specimens from mid to late Eocene sediments inTasmania previously assigned to Falcatifolium do notbelong to that genus, although their true generic affinities are uncertain.Dispersed cuticle specimens from Late Eocene–Oligocene sediments inSouth Australia referred to Falcatifolium are notreliable records of the genus and require further investigation.
Falcatifolium eocenica (D.R.Greenwood) R.S.Hill & L.J.Scriven is the only reliable record of the genus in the Australian fossilrecord to date.

It appears to be where the least derived members of Podocarpus subgenus Foliolatus are preserved; the subgenus may have radiated from there to the islands of Malesia and the rest of tropical Asia.
Brief case studies concerning Acmopyle, Dacrydium, Dacrycarpus and Falcatifolium are presented.

The only suggested gymnosperm exception is the New Caledonian conifer, Parasitaxus ustus, which forms a bizarre graft-like attachment to the roots of another conifer Falcatifolium taxoides.
Yet, the degree of resource dependence of Parasitaxus on Falcatifolium has remained speculative.
Here we show that Parasitaxus is definitively parasitic, but it displays a physiological habit unlike any known angiosperm parasite.

With a greater surface area to the wind at a similar mass, it is thought - although not documented - that sacci confer greater flight range to the pollen grain.
Using electron microscopy, structurally different saccate pollen grains of three extant conifers (Pinus, Falcatifolium, and Dacrydium) have been examined.
Several characteristics have been documented, including overall size, main body size, saccus size, surface ornamentation, wall thickness, wall infrastructure, saccus infrastructure, overall mass, and wall mass.

 Student Research Conference Abstract Display
Using scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy and mathematical modeling, a computational model has been developed to investigate pollen flight.
Saccate pollen grains of three extant conifers (Pinus, Falcatifolium, Dacrydium) were used to create the model.
Examples of structural characters analyzed include: lengths, widths, and depths of the main body and sacci; angle of saccus rotation; thicknesses of the saccus wall, endoreticulations, intine, and exine; and surface ornamentation.

Dacrycarpus imbricatus from the Bolovens Plateau, Lao PDR (Laos)
In the juvenile form Dacrycarpus is interesting in that the leaves are distinctly flattened, often spread out distichously, yet this character is usually lost in the mature form.
Elsewhere among the conifers only in Falcatifolium and Acmopyle are bilaterally flattened leaves found but without change in the adult form.
Where the foliage leaves are bilaterally flattened or acicular, sterile specimens of Dacrycarpus can be identified by the sharp dimorphic leaves because of the penultimate branches always have bifacially flattened leaves or scales."

Aerodynamic features of saccate pollen: Evolutionary implications for wind-pollinated plants — Truman's ...
As such, a preliminary project to empirically investigate and computationally model the aerodynamic properties of a select number of saccate pollen grains has been initiated.
PRELIMINARY RESULTS: Using combined light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy, structurally different saccate pollen grains of three extant conifers (Pinus, Falcatifolium, and Dacrydium) have been critically examined.
Several key characters have been documented, including overall size, main body size, saccus size, surface ornamentation, wall thicknesses, wall infrastructure, saccus infrastructure, overall mass, and wall mass.

It is possible that repairs have been done since my last visit, but from my conversations with friends, it seems that the money simply wasn't there.
I hope that this is not the case, as the forested heart of this park is magnificent, simply chock full of amazing flora: Giant Agathis lanceolata, huge Dacrycarpus viellardii, Acmopyle, Libocedrus, Falcatifolium, and the list goes on.
But the visitor centre is itself very well done and worth the visit, even if the heart of the park is closed.
