Falchion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A falchion (pronounced fal-shun) is a medieval one-handed, single-edged sword of European origin.
In some versions the falchion looks rather like the scramasax and later the sabre, and in some versions the form is irregular or (as is the case in the picture to the right) like a machete with a crossguard.
While one of the few surviving falchions is shaped very much like a large meat cleaver, or large bladed machete (the Conyers falchion), the majority of the depictions in art reflect a design similar to that of the großes Messer.

The falchion was not a thrusting weapon like the estoc or longsword, though some did have sharp points should the need arise, but rather a hacking or slashing weapon employed in a style very similar to a modern machete.
The falchion had a broad, single-edged blade, was very thick along the spine of the weapon (the part of the blade opposite the edge), and sharpened on the convex side of the blade itself.
The European falchion is a direct descendant in form and in function of both the khopesh and the kopis.

My Falchion is a heavy one and I have heard it said that that is actually a good thing with these swords as the were used more like a Machette than a regular sword.
This isn't to say that falchions are not supposed to balance further towards the blade tip, but I'd wager the difference in average balance point is only like 5-10% closer to the tip than other swords.
Some falchions may have been heavier or have more blade presence but everything being equal the edge geometric was probably the main reason that these are efficient cutters.

The falchion is similar to the German Dusack (or Dusagge), and has been dubiously suggested as possibly related to the Dark Age long knife, "seax" (scramanseax), and even later curved blades such as sabres (or sabels).
A later Italian falchion with a slender sabre-like blade was called a "storta" or a "malchus".
There is also the Medieval falchion and the German curved Messer, Grossmessr, and bohemian Dusask The Italians used the curved storta, the straight bladed but curved-edge braquemart and the curved badelair (baudelair, bazelair, or basilaire) as well as the short curved braquet.

Power Attack and Falchion - Wizards Community
Critical threat, doesn't mean critical hit: I can threat a critical on a roll of 15-20, but the threat has to be confirmed before dealing damage and the chance of confirming a critical is the same for a figther with a falchion and for one with a greatsword (assuming equal attack bonus).
Of the two the one who gets more from a critical hit is the one with the greatsword (a falchion's critical is an average damage = 8+modifiers, a greatsword's is = 12+modifiers).
This means that weapons with high crit threats, like rapier and falchion, are better choices than longsword or greatsword in the hands of a massive str character.
