AMPLE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AMPLE (an abbreviation of Advanced Multi-Purpose LanguagE) is a scripting programming language and a part of the Falcon Framework software framework developed for the Apollo/Domain computer by Mentor Graphics.
As the Apollo/Domain was very popular in computer-aided engineering (especially in electronic design automation), AMPLE is still used in several Mentor Graphics applications such as Design Architect and is only slowly being obsoleted.
These tools use a ported version of the Falcon Framework, adapted to run on modern UNIX workstations and even Windows NT.

But in 1991 the disastrous release of its EDA framework Falcon 8.0—dubbed "late-point-slow" in the industry—damaged the company so much that it now finds itself looking up at competitors.
The Falcon Framework [an object-oriented system combining design, database and programming capabilities] had failed, and it was clear we had to find new starting points.
When we tried to do it with Falcon, we failed, because customers not only don't want less than best-in-class but they also want the interoperability that comes when multiple vendors are making products that work together.

We've had big headaches trying to use 3.0a and 3.0b VHDL libraries with Mentor and the Synopsys Falcon Framework Integrator.
This has been very frustrating because Synopsys's special Frameworks install was _supposed_ to make using Mentor _easier_ to use instead of presenting yet _another_ set of software challenges to overcome.

Framework is the best term because it gives you the mental picture of the Falcon Framework, a structure that frames and supports the design process.
Database technology improved significantly in the period ensuing the Falcon Framework, and designers have learned a lot about the relationship of design items and hierarchical development methods.
It would be better if behavioral synthesis concentrated on distilling functional blocks, interfaces, constraints, and properties and set up a framework to maintain a relationship among the fundamental architectural properties and the various levels of design implementation.
