Falconiformes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The idea that Falconiformes should be divided into many orders is because of the suggestion that the order may not share a single lineage that is exclusive of other birds.
However morphological evidence supports the common ancestry of the Falconiformes, and the Strigiformes may be Falconiformes as well.
Falconiformes are known from the Middle Eocene and typically have a sharply hooked beak with a cere (soft mass) on the proximodorsal surface, housing the nostrils.

 falconiform --  Encyclopædia Britannica
Large falconiforms are among the longest-lived birds, as shown both by records in captivity and by the slow breeding rates observed in the wild.
The main distinguishing characters of falconiforms are the hooked beak, used for tearing flesh; taloned feet, used for piercing, grasping, and killing prey; strong feather quills that can withstand the aerodynamic forces of rapid flight; and large eyes, with very acute vision.
In African savannas and southern Indian rice fields, resident falconiform populations are greatly augmented in...

MONOPHYLY OF THE FALCONIFORMES BASED ON SYRINGEAL MORPHOLOGY
I analyzed 124 falconiform syringes and 66 syringes from purported outgroups (Appendix 1).
Because monophyly of the Falconiformes could not be as- sumed, species from these other orders were not treat- ed as outgroups in the analysis, nor was there a con- straint on monophyly imposed in the analysis (Maddison et al.
Falconiformes cur- rently consists of 76 genera and 290 species di- vided into four families (Stresemann and Area- don 1979): Accipitridae, including Accipitrinae (hawks and eagles, 59 genera, 217 species) and Pandioninae (Osprey, monotypic); Falconidae (falcons, 10 genera, 62 species); Cathartidae (New World vultures, 5 genera, 7 species); and Sagittariidae (Secretarybird, monotypic).

Paired t-tests were used to compare the measurements with the predictions of Aschoff and Pohl (1970) and Wasser (1986) for non-passerines and falconiforms, respectively, of equiv- alent body size.
Wasser (1986) derived an allometric equation for predicting falconiform RMR during the resting phase of the daily cycle.
Wasset (1986) demonstrated that the relationship of RMR to body mass during the resting phase of falconiforms does not conform well to the predictions of Aschoff and Pohl (1970).

 Re: vultures and musophagids
Yes, Sibley and Alquist have presented much molecular evidence and it is generally accepted that vulturids are storks, but not everyone is willing to say so.
Cracraft has been rather cautious on this in his papers (unlike his grouping of owl in falconiforms; other than vulturids in his phylogeny).
Griffiths has presented three syringeal characters (taken from a select group of birds) that support a vulturid-falconiform clade (one of the characters is found in an owl however).
