The Falklands War (in Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas, or the Malvinas War) was a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands between March and June 1982.
The force was increased by 23 part-timers of the Falkland Islands Volunteer Force.
The embarked force was 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines,(with attached units from the Parachute Regiment)under the command of Brigadier J. Thompson RM.

The Falklands War or the Malvinas War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas), was an armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, also known in Spanish as the Islas Malvinas, between March and June of 1982.
The war has played an important role in the culture of both countries, and has been the subject of several books, movies, and songs, although due to the low number of casualties on both sides it is not seen as a truly major event in the individual history of either country.
The invasion of the populated areas of the Falkland Islands was preceded by the invasion of South Georgia, located 1,390 kilometres east of the Falklands.

The Falklands war was remarkable for the adherence of both parties to the laws of war and to general just war understandings.
In relation to the Falkland War it may be claimed that Britain was guilty of 'a certain degree' of provocation in its dealings with Argentina in the period leading up to the outbreak of war and that this factor detracts from its claim of just cause.
Britain had a just cause for war (response to aggression) but its moral position was compromised by the extent to which it unwittingly drew Argentina towards the initiation of conflict and by the inevitable disproportion between the value of the interests being defended and the cost of that defence.

The war was a massive boost to the popularity of Margaret Thatcher and played a role in ensuring her re-election in 1983, although several members of her government resigned, including the former Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington.

On May 28 British forces took Darwin and Goose Green after a tough struggle, seventeen British and 200 Argentinian soldiers were killed and 1400 Argentinian troops were taken prisoner.

The blockade of the Falklands and a whole series of air strikes against local Argentinean installations were initiated on the early morning of 1 May 1982, after negotiations failed.
In mid-May the British special forces conducted several clandestine operations: airfield on the Pebble Island (BAN Calderón in Argentinean military parlance) was attacked by SAS and a number of Pucara light combat aircraft were destroyed or badly damaged, rendering the site practically inoperational for the rest of the war.
Although claimed as damaged in the last Exocet-attack by Argentinean Navy’s Super Etendards and Air Force’s Skyhawks, on 30 June 1982, the HMS Invincible actually remained in the area long after the main body of the British Task force and was relieved on the station only by the HMS Illustrious in July 1982.
