The Falklands War (1982) / La Guerra de Las Malvinas (1982)
The government of the Falkland Islands administers the British dependent territories of South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the Shag and Clerke rocks, lying from 700 to 2,000 miles (1,100 to 3,200 km) to the east and southeast of the Falklands.
Argentina based its claim to the Falklands on papal bulls of 1493 modified by the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), by which Spain and Portugal had divided the New World between themselves; on succession from Spain; on the islands' proximity to South America; and on the need to end a colonial situation.
From start to finish, this undeclared war lasted 72 days, claimed nearly 1000 casualties (236 British and 655 Argentine), many of them innocent conscripts that were drafted in a hurry by the Argentine junta.

Falklands War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Falklands War or the Malvinas War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas), was an armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, also known in Spanish as the Islas Malvinas, between March and June of 1982.
The war has played an important role in the culture of both countries, and has been the subject of several books, movies, and songs, although due to the low number of casualties on both sides it is not seen as a truly major event in the individual history of either country.
The invasion of the populated areas of the Falkland Islands was preceded by the invasion of South Georgia, located 1,390 kilometres east of the Falklands.

An elite invasion force trained in secrecy, but its timetable was shortened on March 19, when a dispute erupted on British-controlled South Georgia island (1,000 miles [1,600 km] east of the Falklands) between Argentine salvage workers and British scientists stationed there.
On April 25, while the British task force was steaming 8,000 miles (13,000 km) to the war zone via Ascension Island, a smaller British force retook South Georgia island, in the process capturing one of Argentina's vintage diesel-electric submarines.

It is notable that the Argentine air units bore the brunt of the battle during the six-week war and inflicted serious damage and losses on United Kingdom (UK) forces, in contrast to the quite minor losses inflicted on those forces by the large Argentine ground force.
The air force was outside the authority of the theater commander and reported directly to the junta, although it was supposed to coordinate its efforts with the other commands.
However, a modern air force is an expensive proposition, and midsized and smaller nations are financially constrained and required to tailor their air forces to meet the most probable threat.

An Introduction to the Falklands War   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Falklands War was fought between April and June 1982 between Britain and Argentina over a 150 year old dispute about sovereignty over the South Atlantic Islands of East and West Falkland, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The main operation to recapture the Falklands was launched on 1st May and the Argentineans were attacked by naval bombardment and bombing from the air which included an RAF Vulcan refuelled 7 times from Ascension Island.
This enabled the British forces to land unharrased on 21 May. For the next week the British dug in and were subjected to brave but misguided air attacks that destroyed and damaged warships without harming the merchant vessels building up the supplies needed to allow the ground forces to move against Stanley.

Little reference, however, is made to the ground effort as this was a conflict with two separate confrontations: the Argentine attack of the British fleet; and, the movement of the British ground force on Port Stanley.
The air war had been intense and the low level tactics of the Argentines, pursued with the great courage and unrelenting resolve of Argentine pilots, proved to be a formidable threat to the Royal Navy.
The British could get closer to the war with their carriers, but still had to contend with the inflexibilities associated with carrier based operations and the finite number of evolutions that could be supported by waterborne platforms.
