It was published by DC Comics from July 2003 until it was cancelled with issue #20 in May 2005 because of low sales.
The story focuses on Lee (also known as the Fallen Angel) who is arguably a superheroine residing in the city of Bete Noire.
Malachi An angel himself, he was the Fallen Angel’s mentor and lover when she herself was an angel, though their friendship ended when the Fallen Angel was stripped of her wings and exiled to Earth.

Fallen Angel requires you to be able to understand concepts like loss, hatred, anger, and viciousness, and all of these from the supposed hero of the title.
Though those familiar with David's past work may wonder if the yet to be revealed past of the Fallen Angel of the title has any shared history with his previous titles, the greater point of the book are the grey areas we all live in.
It should be noted that the graphic novel, a collection of the DC comics series of the same name, is intended for mature readers and contains some language and depictions of violence, however, both writer and artist keep these factors within the bounds needed to tell the story and never become salacious in their use.

Not only is it refreshing to see a female-lead comic whose heroine is both strong and sexy without close-ups of titanic bosoms every few panels, but Lee is one of the more likeable protagonists of recent memory.
Fallen Angel’s potential is immeasurable, and its most engaging aspect is the mystery behind its morally ambiguous characters.
Fallen Angel could be Peter David’s best work in comics to date, but it isn’t.

At this point, Fallen Angel’s status at DC was, shall we say, undetermined, so he asked if it was anything we’d consider taking on if DC cancelled it.
Moving the series was an option due to the fact that Fallen Angel, despite being published by DC and a part of the DC line of comics during its life (though not exactly placed within the DC Universe), was owned by David and series artist David Lopez.
Even though there’ve been a copious number of pages of December’s Fallen Angel #1 posted here, there, and everywhere on the web, co-creator and writer Peter David and IDW are still getting the occasional “will it be accessible?” questions from potential readers.

In July of 2005, the final issue of Peter David's "Fallen Angel" was published by DC Comics.
The move of "Fallen Angel" from DC to IDW was an industry rumor for quite some time (as first reported in CBR's own "LYING IN THE GUTTERS) but according to Ryall, the deal happened suddenly…and then not so suddenly.
These three images are from page 16, panel 2 of "Fallen Angel" #1 and show Woodward's three part process in creating art, starting with pencils, moving on to painting with goache, then the airbrushed base colors.

 Comics Should Be Good: This Comic Is Good - Fallen Angel #1
It can either attempt to be basically the same comic that it was before it was cancelled (using the logic of "We wouldn't have gotten a second chance if someone had not seen something worthwhile in the first go-around"), or it can re-tool, attempt to appeal to a new audience.
Woodward has a painted style, which at times can be a bit much, but in a moody book like Fallen Angel, it fits right in with the atmosphere.
In any event, Peter David has cut Fallen Angel down to the barebones, and makes it a very straightforward story, and also manages to avoid calling Lee (the Fallen Angel, natch) a "court of last resort," which is highly appreciated on my end.

However, for all that, Fallen Angel is still a strong book with a tone much different than prior David projects, and I'm willing to stick around for a few issues waiting for him to pull back the curtain on the intriguing background elements.
Like Outsiders, Fallen Angel seems to be benefiting from a maturation of the type of super-hero comics that DC is willing to have outside of their imprints.
Fallen Angel hits that teenage and up mark that the Ultimate line has aimed so successfully for in recent years pretty well.

The series was originally published by DC Comics, where it lasted for twenty issues despite, as David claimed, a lack of marketing from the publisher.
The Fallen Angel fans have been terrific, and I think they're entitled to know who she is and where she comes from.
That is to say, the main storyline will be set in Bete Noire, but someone who was key in the Angel's origin will be arriving in the city, tying in to flashback sequences that reveal her background.

Even were we to dismiss these obvious clues, scenes of Fallen Angel Domesticus shatter the mystique David previously built around her.

I've developed a theory in the last couple months that the original idea that eventually became Fallen Angel came to PAD as The Adventures of Linda Danvers, but he realized that all he needed to do to give himself complete ownership of the concept was to take Linda out.
The last issue of Captain Marvel was heartbreaking, and the last panel of the Fallen Angel finale is, in light of its cancellation, also strangely sad and poignant.
But to all those critic I point to Fallen Angel as one of the reason why you walk amongst the comic high lords, and why when your name is one a book it gets attention, you're earned it.
