Fallen Angels (1995 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fallen Angels (墮落天使) is a 1995 Hong Kong movie written and directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring Leon Lai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Michelle Reis, Charlie Yeung and Karen Mok.
Fallen Angels, being shot and conducted in a modern way - using fast cuts, hand-cameras, strange light visuals - reminding one of a hip, glossy photo-magazine, is regularly compared to the 1960s films of Jean-Luc Godard, where you will end up not with conclusions but with impressions.
It was originally conceived as the third story for Chungking Express, but Fallen Angels can be considered a sequel due to similar themes, locations and methods of filming, while one of the main characters lives in the Chungking Mansions and works at the Midnight Express food stall.

Zhiwu, who doesn't speak (his thoughts are heard in voiceover), is an aimless young man who makes his living in a weird, whimsical way, by breaking and entering businesses that are closed for the night and intimidating passers-by into being his customers.
Fallen Angels is a lot funnier than Chungking Express, but it's also sillier and in the end much slighter.

Fallen Angels, the unofficial third segment of Chungking Express, stars pop icon Leon Lai, a young Karen Mok, the always-gorgeous Charlie Yeung, the ever playful Takeshi Kaneshiro, and a different Michelle Reis than I'm used to.
Fallen Angels does it even better by switching back and forth between 2 separate (and barely connected) stories, similar to Ashes of Time (except Ashes has far more stories to switch back to and led to a mess).

True, the TV Angels may have had to show off their bodies, but they seemed like adult women who could speak in complete sentences and hold their own at a dinner party.

Plot: Originally intended to be a third story in his now classic Chunking Express, Fallen Angels has emerged as what some critics have come to consider his "quintessential work." Set in the neon- washed underworld of present day Hong Kong, Fallen Angels intertwines two exhilarating tales of love and isolation.
A poet of modern alienation, Kar-Wai's universe is populated with characters both dark and comic, magical and existential; Fallen Angels is both a vie at revolutionary cinema and an homage to a love for movies.

Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels is a sequel of sorts to the director's 1994 U.S. breakthrough Chungking Express.
Expanding on the latter's style, themes, and mood, Fallen Angels is set in the surreal milieu of urban, nighttime Hong Kong.
The movie follows these episodic romances almost half-heartedly as with Wong's other films, and digressionary moments attract much of the camera's distracted gaze.

The author does not stay away from non-canonical areas, such as magickal lore angels, celestial hierarchies, the demonic realm, etc. He both welcomes or is skeptical of various characters, mostly depending on the degree of consistency or lack of such in the available literature on each particular subject.
An angel who is a benign helper in a certain context might be an evil demon in another tradition or system of beliefs.

There's the trademark visual flourishes taken to the nth degree (dig those wide-angled lenses and gushes of "frozen-time" photography); the usual cast of oddball romantics and just plain oddballs; and an eclectic soundtrack which finds time for Massive Attack-like jungle beats and bluesy piano stabs, not to mention a touching ballad by Chiyi Chin.
Some moments stand out: Reis forlornly masturbating to a Laurie Anderson tune, Kaneshiro shooting home movies of his down-to-earth father, and Lai getting involved with "it girl" Karen Mok, who hams it up in a rainbow-red wig.
But despite Wong's best efforts to construct a straightforward story this time around (or perhaps because of them), the film doesn't quite equal the sum of its memorable vignettes.

Swathed in neon and attitude, Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels is arguably the apotheosis of the Hong Kong auteur's hyper-kinetic, pop-informed style.
The movie, shot mainly in wide angle by long-time Wong collaborator Christopher Doyle, is a lush reverie: Wong's characters drift through the movie in various states of ruminative alienation and ennui.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Fallen Angels | Deseret Morning News Web edition
One of the knocks against Hong Kong art-house film director Wong Kar-Wai is that he often throws in enough plot for three or four movies, not just one.
But the film is a companion piece (if not an outright sequel) to his most acclaimed work, 1994's "Chungking Express," and one of its prominent plot threads was originally intended to be part of the earlier movie.
"Fallen Angels" is not rated but would certainly receive at least an R for violent gunplay, gore, vulgar gags and references, sex, profanity, glimpses of nude artwork and use of a couple of racial epithets.
