It's probably still space opera, but where 'Night's Dawn' was a World War Two tale of Good versus Evil, 'Fallen Dragon' offers a Vietnam scenario where the motives are murky and the characters are conflicted within themselves as well as with one another.
'Fallen Dragon' takes place in a universe where starflight has been achieved, and man has colonized other planets and star systems.

Peter F. Hamilton, Fallen Dragon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Fallen Dragon is a novel that should appeal to both male and female readers who enjoy the science fiction genre.
At first glance it appears to be focus on interstellar military missions and planetary discovery and development; however, it is solidly character-based, centering on the life of one Lawrence Newton.
The nature of the "Fallen Dragon" of the title and its significance is tantalizingly withheld until the final few chapters.

To sum up, 'Fallen Dragon' is above average for books of this genre, but not by all that much.
At it's heart, 'Fallen Dragon' is the story of one man's life.

'Fallen Dragon' is set in the 24th Century, long before the Confederate Navy, in its place is the Zanti-Braun Corperation, which uses soldiers in near inprenertable armour, called 'Skins' in missions known as asset - realization, which involves they taking back the technology they lent to corperations to help them colonise planets.
His characters have a lot more depth than many a sci-fi novel, and he spends considerable time making the physics and biological aspects of his world believable; unless you know your space physics it's very easy to believe everything he says, such is the assured tone used and general sense most of it makes.

The book was written, it seems, just as (or before) our occupation of Iraq was getting started, so the echo may not be directly intended, but that occupation is far from unique, and it’s obvious that Hamilton had exactly the kind of contemporary imperialism we’re practicing in mind when he wrote the book.
In Fallen Dragon, hugely powerful multi-national corporations own colonies, most of which they obtain by assuming the debts incurred by other corporations.
And when they own a colony, they expect a return…so the way they get it is to send in a military force to invade, occupy, and loot.

"The Legacy of Heorot" (1987 UK), with Pournelle and Steven Barnes, replays the Beowulf saga on a colony planet: the natives of the planet have the unenviable role of the dragon.
"Fallen Angels" (1991), with Pournelle and Michael FLYNN -- in which the US Government betrays its own astronauts -- once again treats environmentalists as villains in a planetary drama of the near future.

Fallen Dragon by Peter F. Hamilton - Official sffworld.com review
Nonetheless, this novel is truly Epic (note the capital "E"), it carries the reader through the highs and lows of the hero’s journey, the decisions he makes, the consequences of those decisions and all the emotion that is involved in the hero’s life.
Highly regarded authors such as Hamilton often deserve a second attempt, and with Fallen Dragon, I was more than willing to try and more importantly-I was utterly satisfied and impressed.
While Fallen Dragon does rely on these technological elements and truly plausible societal postulations, Hamilton invests so much time, and so much of the novel laying the groundwork for Lawrence Newton’s characterization, that the effect is that of an even, concise and confident writer completely at ease with his bountiful skills.

I was excited to see Fallen Dragon, having greatly enjoyed Hamilton's Night's Dawn series (issued as a trilogy in Britain but in six parts here).
In FALLEN DRAGON, I only found one major subplot that appeared too contrived; involving circumstances surrounding the main character Lawrence's girlfriend Rebecca.
Add in his ability to salt his story with enough techno-babble to keep us science challenged types impressed and Fallen Dragon is a big time winner.
