Infinity is a term with very distinct, separate meanings which arise in theology, philosophy, mathematics and everyday life.
Infinity is not a real number but may be considered part of the extended real number line, in which arithmetic operations involving infinity may be performed.
Leopold Kronecker rejected the notion of infinity and began a school of thought in the philosophy of mathematics called finitism, which led to the philosophical and mathematical school of mathematical constructivism.

Falling into Infinity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Falling Into Infinity is the fourth full-length studio album by progressive metal band Dream Theater, released in 1997.
This album is so disliked by some Dream Theater fans that it was sometimes booed mercilessly when its cover artwork was shown during the opening sequence of the Train of Thought tour in 2004.
In Japan, a limited edition of "Falling Into Infinity" comes with a bonus 3" CD that contains demos of "Take Away My Pain" and "Speak To Me"

Dream Theater returns with "Falling into Infinity" (Elektra), their third release since their major label debut "Images and Words" (1992).
Most of the songs on "Falling into Infinity" share the same tempo, a sluggish plodding groove that isn't slow enough or fast enough to be really interesting.
The band can write musically interesting ballads, such as "Surrounded," but none of the pop material on "Falling into Infinity" shows this skill, particularly the vapid "Hollow Years." The odd juxtaposition of skillful instrumental songs and empty pop ballads drains the record of energy and focus.

From what has surfaced, the production of "Falling Into Infinity" was plagued with label pressure and intrusion on the creative process, something dreadful for any band worth their salt, as DT certainly is. This meant the final result was not exactly what the band intended it to be and it definitely shows.
As for "Falling Into Infinity", hurt by a big lack of balance, still manages to include excellent tracks which are very well executed (usually even better and extended) in later live albums.
Falling Into Infinity was Dream Theater's 4th studio album, 5th if you count the excellent A Change of Seasons EP.

Bass Player review of Falling Into Infinity
On the band's best cuts, everyone's in perfect lockstep-such as on Infinity's opener, 'New Millennium.' The tune combines all of the best elements of King Crimson, Rush, and Soundgarden, with a dense arrangement built around Myung's insistent Yamaha 5-string ostinato.
This time, Myung wields a Chapman Stick; the instrument choice is pure genius, as the Stick's unique tone-ultra-deep, with a super-detailed, almost acoustic-sounding top-fits the song brilliantly.
Falling into Infinity is an intense listen - at times fatiguing to the ear, but still highly enjoyable.

MSJ - Dream Theater-Falling Into Infinity
New Millenium starts with a riff which is somewhat reminiscent of Yes, then drops into a really nice bass groove.
The latter section of this piece is just a little reminiscent of Kansas, and provides a seamless segue into Lines in the Sand.
There is an almost funky feel to this song in places, and it eventually drops into a nice laid back section.

Unfortunately, "Falling Into Infinity" doesn't quite live up to previous efforts mostly because it is very uneven, even moreso than "Awake" is.
This is followed by the weakest song on the album, one most fans and the band themselves hate the most, You Not Me. The reason for this hatred is that DT were forced to work with outside songwriter Desmond Child, who wrote the ghastly and awful music for Aerosmith from their 1980s comeback on.
Falling Into Infinity often gets a bad rep, but I can't see it.

Ground and Sky review - Dream Theater - Falling Into Infinity
Most impressive to me is John Petrucci, who shows a whole new sense of style and musical sense than he has in previous efforts.
I had heard from people who had seen John do clinics and the like that he was in fact a very diverse player.
After the powerful climax, this cut blends nicely into "Lines in the Sand", an epic which is easily the best track on the album.

When I saw the cover of "Falling…." The first time, I sensed a wind of change.
It’s obvious that they’ve now pulled the seat back a little and gone into the jam mode.
As a final, I would like to say that even if the sound and music on this album is different, Dream Theater plays, as always, with the same quality.

Dream Theater: FALLING INTO INFINITY - Review by Gerald Tan
On their latest full length release, "Falling Into Infinity", Dream Theater seem to have reined in somewhat their propensity to create complex maps of sound that leave you searching for a hook or just a little heart, and instead, have written some of their simplest songs ever.
But it's really on their lengthier work-outs like "New Millennium" and "Trial of Tears" on which the band exhibit their amazingly proficient level of instrumental wanksmanship that we are reminded why Dream Theater's latest material has proved to be disappointing.
This most musicianly of bands seems to have attempted to study at the feet of masters like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Rush, and when that wasn't turning out so well, they decided to just steal their shoes instead.

 Falling Into Infinity Appreciation Thread
But as Mike said, those were the years of the band being screwed with the management, and to pull an album like this off at a time like that is pretty amazing to me.
I like to listen to it late at night with my headphones, as it's an album that is very relaxing and dosen't require a lot of attention.
To be fair to this album, the live versions of Take Away my Pain and Hollow Years (assuming they always play it like at Budokan) are very good and I really like Peruvian Skies and Trial of Tears.

DREAM THEATER Falling Into Infinity review by alan_pfeifer
Dream Theater's 4th studio album (and my 1st DT album) while it still contains much of what I've come to love about the band, suffers from being over-stuffed.
As good as the songs are on the album, it could have been cut down into a more consice effort, and then maybe it would have been better accepted by fans.
