"Snow Falling on Cedars" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
"...this film is a tender retrospective love story between Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), son of a local newspaper editor and Hatsue Miyamoto before her marriage to Kazuo." This love story artfully depicts on film the progression from childhood playmates, to kissing 13-year-olds, to high-school students in an intimate sexual relationship.
To be found in this film is a tender retrospective love story between Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), son of a local newspaper editor and Hatsue Miyamoto before her marriage to Kazuo.
Over all, Snow Falling on Cedars is the mildest PG-13 film I have seen in a long time.

Snow Falling On Cedars is a richly textured film that operates on several levels, often at the same time.

The Record - News - 02/14/2005 - Love a field of study at Sage Colleges
In another tale, a man's one-sided toxic obsession with the object of his affection warns of the dangers of falling too deeply in love and allowing yourself to believe in the myth that another person, idea or object could be the single thing that fills the void in your heart.
The popular course draws from philosophical, religious, literary, psychological and other sources - including film, art and music - to help students understand the nature and significance of love around the world and within their own relationships.
But perhaps the most perfect example of true love lies in the story of a humble couple, Baucis and Philemon, who were rewarded by the gods for their generosity.

SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: LOVE AND BASKETBALL
In addition, this is thankfully yet another film that portrays African-American characters as real people instead of falling prey to the "normal" black stereotypes usually found in the dumb, urban sex comedies and/or "gang-banger" films.
A well-acted and, for the most part, solidly constructed if not particularly spectacular tale, the film is appropriately presented in four quarters, starting with the dual protagonists' first meeting as competitive youngsters through the beginning of their late high school romance that closes out the first half.
Supporting performances are solid and range from Dennis Haysbert ("Random Hearts," "Love Field") as Quincy's flawed father to Alfre Woodard ("Mumford," "Down in the Delta") as Monica's stay at home mom and include Debbie Morgan (TV's "All My Children") and Harry J. Lennix ("Titus") as their respective spouses.

 Review: Snow Falling On Cedars
Based on David Guterson's international bestseller, the film tells of Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), chief reporter for the local paper - once edited by his revered father (Sam Shepard) - whose interest in the case is affected by his feelings for Kazuo's wife (Youki Kudoh).
Before the attack on Pearl Harbour, after which her family was forced out of their home and incarcerated in an internment camp, she was his first and only love.
Many of the qualities of post war American life - before teenagers were invented, before drugs and guns blew away innocence - are encapsulated in the quiet dignity of this snowbound, seabound environment.

Snow Falling On Cedars : description du film, horaire et critiques Montreal - CinemaMontreal.com
Snow Falling on Cedars has all the things I like in a movie: mystery, love story, human emotions, and pain.

Australian director Scott Hicks fell in love with David Guterson’s PEN/Faulkner Award-winning novel, Snow Falling on Cedars, round about the time his life changed for ever with the worldwide success of Shine.
Snow Falling on Cedars was one of the most critically acclaimed best-sellers of the mid-nineties.
Also a producer on Snow, he readily accepted Hicks’ extra input into the script of the new movie.

OFFOFFOFF film review SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS movie by Scott Hicks with Youki Kudoh, Ethan Hawke, Rick Yune, Anthony Harrison, Max Von Sydow written by Ronald Bass, Scott Hicks
For a big-budget studio film, there are a lot of art-house pretensions in Scott Hicks' "Snow Falling on Cedars." Artistic shots of young lovers catching raindrops on their tongues in the bowels of a tree, or making out behind dimpled glass.
That story is a post-World War II courtroom drama cum love story set in the high country of Washington state where the cedars touch the sky and everything is blue and gray (except for the occasional red of the women's lipstick).
It's a rare moment of truth in a film that exploits its cinematic strengths — exquisite photography, manipulative music, and a fractured narrative style— at the expense of honest storytelling.

Snow Falling on Cedars - The ScoreRealm
I haven't seen the film, but I love David Guterson's book very much, and listening to the score while reading book, it's another 100% fit (if that can be said at all!).
One of the last scores of 1999 was Howard's work to Snow Falling on Cedars, an "interracial soap-opera cum murder".
Overall, Snow Falling on Cedars is a very good score.

 Snow Falling on Cedars
Snow Falling on Cedars is the first film director Scott Hicks has made since the Oscar-winning Shine back in 1996, but it has actually been in the can for over two years.
The case stirs long dormant memories in one of the reporters covering the trial (Hawke), who was once in love with the accused man's wife (Kudoh), but whose romance was shattered when World War II broke out and the young woman, along with her family, were arrested up and forced to live in prison camps.
Listening to Snow Falling on Cedars is almost like listening to the sounds of nature, and is actually more like something Thomas Newman would write.

"Snow Falling on Cedars" is Scott Hicks' first film since "Shine," the 1996 story of the pianist seized with paralyzing doubts.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: Snow Falling on Cedars
Unfortunately, Snow Falling on Cedars, directed by Scott Hicks (Shine), is a prime example of an unsuccessful interpretation of a tremendous novel.
With a large ensemble cast of impressive actors, a lot of the talent was wasted on roles that were limited because the film was in a constant time warp.
In the two hours and five minutes that it takes to watch the film, you can probably make a significant dent into the novel, and it'll probably cost the same.

short film about love - review at videovista.net
However, love is the key to this film, whether it's the maternal love of Tomek's landlady (Stefania Iwinska) for a man who isn't actually her son, Magda's cynical feelings after one too many bad relationships, or Tomek's falling for the woman he is spying on.
A Short Film About Love is an expanded cinema version of the made-for-TV Dekalog VI : Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery.
All of these are the work of a great director, but one who never surpassed this modestly budgeted series of films that he made on a minuscule budget for television.

Snow Falling on Cedars Movie Review
"Cedars" toys with a love fable, toys with making a statement of Japanese suffrage (the concentration camps for Japanese-Americans during W.W.II), spends a lot of time in the courtroom, but is ultimately a tale of one man's wrestle with an obsession recorded on film in a fashion far superior to its story.
I was trembling with excitement over this film until the halfway mark when the art became more than a tad indulgent neglecting its responsibility to story, making the film rather disproportionate.
Oddly, this love story is really more of a courtroom drama; however, as soon as we realize this, the artistry and the plot line unfortunately take off in different directions.

 Film Review: Garfield: The Movie
It is only then that Garfield grows a conscience, gets off his chair and tries to save Odie, while Jon and Liz run around after the animals, falling in love.
The story goes typically like this: Jon (Breckin Meyer) is in love with his vet, Liz Wilson (Jennifer Love Hewitt), and uses the "real" man in charge, Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray), as a regular excuse to visit her at the clinic.
Meyer and Love Hewitt's performances are forgettable at best, although Alan Cumming's contribution, as the voice of the classically trained cat, Persnickity, is entertaining.

"Mood" is a first for Wong, in the sense that it is a very classic-styled movie, evoking the romanticism of another day and age; in his other films, Wong has favored faster, hand-held cameras, and MTV-style techniques.

 LA Weekly: Calendar
The drama of doctors and of the body at risk hovers next to the prosaic pleasures of everyday life, while the rhythmic cadence of a respirator echoes the film’s cycles of rising and falling, of living and dying.
(Seth, as it happens, grew up in the same small Ontario town as did the master of narrative nuance, writer Alice Munro.) Both tackled semi-autobiographical themes: Optic Nerve tracked Tomine's 20-something angst - about desperate crushes, existential ennui, loneliness, falling in love with a cute insomniac girl in a coffee shop at 2 a.m.
But the meat of the film is their wittily edited interviews with company members, now in their 80s and 90s and scattered around the world, many of them still active as teachers and consultants.
