It is to be funded by Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. The stadium is currently planned to be a 22,000 all-seater stadium, however this capacity could increase.
Because of this designation, the stadium plans were subject to a separate planning inquiry by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
The stadium is planned to open in time for the 2008/09 English football season.

Falmer is part of Lewes district, and only the coach park will be in Falmer, not the stadium.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has ruled the 23,000-seater stadium can be built at Falmer on the outskirts of the city on the edge of the South Downs.
