Established in 1911, the Falmouth Stakes is run in honour of the sixth Viscount Falmouth (1819-89), one of the leading owner-breeders of the 19th century who was responsible for 16 English Classic victories between 1857 and 1883, including the Derby winners Kingscraft (1870) and Silvio (1877).
The Falmouth Stakes was dominated in the mid 1990s by the owner/trainer combination of Lord Carnarvon and Richard Hannon, successful for three consecutive years.
The 2003 Falmouth Stakes was landed by the James Fanshawe-trained Macadamia, winner of the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot on her previous outing.

Evelyn Boscawen, sixth Viscount Falmouth, was born in 1819, and inherited the title and the estate of Tregothnan, in Cornwall, from his father, at the age of 23.
Falmouth entered racing in 1857, and his first classic winner was Hurricane (1859 by Wild Dayrell - Midia), winner of the 1,000 Guineas in 1862.
As a broodmare for Falmouth, she produced the 2,000 Guineas winner Atlantic (by Thormanby), which the breeder sold to France, where he was very successful, counting Le Sancy among his most important progeny.

The Lancashire Oaks at Haydock and the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster, often referred to as the fillies' St Leger, are both being elevated from group III to group II.
Other changes include the upgrading of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom, Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket, and Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood to group III status.
The changes are a result of the European Pattern Committee's decision to widen the opportunities available to fillies in Europe to try and ensure that less are sold and exported abroad or retired at the end of 3-year-old careers.
