  false memory
A false memory is a memory which is a distortion of an actual experience, or a confabulation of an imagined one.
Many false memories involve confusing or mixing fragments of memory events, some of which may have happened at different times but which are remembered as occurring together.
Still other false memories are believed to be the result of the prodding, leading, and suggestions of therapists and counselors.

 Creating False Memories
To study false memory, my students and I first had to find a way to plant a pseudomemory that would not cause our subjects undue emotional stress, either in the process of creating the false memory or when we revealed that they had been intentionally deceived.
In addition to actual events reported by parents, each participant was given one false event either an overnight hospitalization for a high fever and a possible ear infection, or a birthday party with pizza and a clown that supposedly happened at about the age of five.
False memories are constructed by combining actual memories with the content of suggestions received from others.

 False
In sum, the use of the phrase ''false memory syndrome'' accurately depicts three skeptical views: first, that false memories of childhood abuse are common; second, that false memories of childhood abuse have a typical etiology; and third, that it is possible to provide a profile of the character type most likely to manifest pseudomemories.
The proliferation of empirical research on false memories needs to be understood in the context of the interpersonal relations that precipitate the formation of institutions such as the False Memory Syndrome Foundation, and the political and cultural climate that this sort of institution and its media followers create (see Addelson 1993).
A primary difficulty with both sides of the false memory debate, as currently constructed, is the assumption of client passivity and the subsequent failure to hold the client responsible for her beliefs, feelings, or behaviors.

Type I and type II errors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
False positives are common in full text searching, in which the search algorithm examines all of the text in all of the stored documents and tries to match one or more of the search terms that have been supplied by the user.
The ratio of false positives (identifying an innocent traveller as a terrorist) to true positives (detecting a would-be terrorist) is, therefore, very high; and because almost every alarm is a false positive, the positive predictive value of these screening tests is very low.
False negatives are problematic in biometric scans, such as those involving iris or retina scanning or facial recognition.

False friend - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

False cognates, by contrast, are similar words in different languages that appear to have a common historical linguistic origin (regardless of meaning) but actually do not.

 False Confessions?
To estimate the frequency of false confessions, one should canvass the available empirical evidence for estimates of (1) the number of criminal cases; (2) the error rate (that is, the wrongful conviction rate) in those cases; and (3) the proportion of wrongful convictions attributable to false confessions.
In light of the competing risks to the innocent from false confessions and lost confessions, the important public policy question becomes the relative frequency of false confessions as a cause of wrongful convictions versus true confessions as a cure for wrongful convictions.
If a person who has made a false confession is not convicted-because the police do not arrest, the prosecutor does not indict, or the jury does not convictthen the screens in the system have at least worked to prevent the ultimate miscarriage of justice, the conviction of an innocent person.
