False positive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The trouble with false positives is that the more you test the more apparent disease you find, also called a false-positive explosion.
For instance, mammography screening has a false negative rate of 5 to 10% depending on age, that is 5 to 10% of women without breast cancer nevertheless receive a positive test result.
The false positive rate and the false negative rate are dependent: to decrease one is to increase the other.

HIV & AIDS - False Positive Viral Loads
Although it is reasonable that false positive viral loads would appear any time there is a great deal of cell death because of the high quantities of RNA that are released when cells die in large numbers, no controlled studies were found that attempt to determine what factors influence the likelihood of false positive results.
In contrast to the high rate of false positive results observed with gag primers, env DNA [env is another protein thought to be specific to HIV] was not detected by laboratory B in any of the specimens from either seronegative or seropositive individuals.
False positive viral loads occur commonly in 3 to 10% of people who are HIV negative, with the highest reported rate being 60%.

Patient Education - Fluorescent Antinuclear Antibody Test "False Positive"
While a “false positive” FANA test typically signals the presence of antinuclear antibodies in a healthy individual, these antibodies are usually of no clinical significance and are best ignored.
However, if the positive results are associated with an infection or the use of certain drugs, eliminating the infection or stopping use of the offending drug may lead to disappearance of the antinuclear antibodies.

Windows Genuine Advantage : When a 'False Positive' isn't a false positive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
I think it's super important to be clear about the idea of 'false positives' so I'd like to take this opportunity to explain a bit about how WGA works and why when some people believe they have a legit license for Windows but WGA fails to validate their installed copy.
To be precise, an actual 'false positive' would occur if WGA identifed a specific copy of windows installed on a system as non-genuine or unlicensed when in fact it was genuine and licensed.
These scenarios are not real 'false positives' because that the WGA software did perform as designed and accurately detect an install of Windows that was not licensed for the PC it was installed on or was wrong for some other reason.

While a false positive on an HPT is not nearly as common as a false negative, it can still happen.
Your HPT is not accurate after that specified period, and the positive result that shows up two hours should not be relied on.
A positive result may mean pregnancy or may indicate residual injected HCG, but if you get a negative result followed by positive results, it's a good sign that the injected HCG has left your system and the positive test is accurate.
