It was a unit that sat underneath the Famicom and used non-standard floppy disks for data storage.
The device was connected to the Famicom deck by plugging an included cartridge, known as the RAM adapter, into the system's cartridge port, and then connecting a supplied cable from this cartridge to the disk drive.
The Famicom Disk System was capable of running on six C-cell batteries in lieu of the supplied AC adapter, even though the Famicom itself was not portable.

The Super Famicom was released on November 21, 1990 for ¥32,000, and it came with two controllers.
Another interesting note is that the Super Famicom logo appeared in the "Special Zone" of Super Mario World worldwide, despite the fact that the logo was not used for the SNES releases in North America, however the logo was used on European releases.

Both the controllers and the microphone were subsequently dropped from the redesigned AV Famicom in favor of the two seven-pin controller ports on the front panel used in the NES from its inception.
Also in contrast to the Famicom, the controllers included with the NES were identical to each other - the second controller lacked the microphone that was present on the Famicom model, and possessed the same "Start" and "Select" buttons as the primary controller.

Because it is a good hardware based emulation of the Famicom, you can use a 60-72 pin converter to plug your US and European carts directly in to your GBA/SP through the Time Machine as well.
On the interesting side, Martin Nielsen of NESWORLD was able to attach a Famicom Disk System directly to this hookup as well, and it worked flawlessly.
