Familiar spirit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Familiars were mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth, as the witches called their familiars.
The form taken by the familiar is also influenced by the personality of its master as in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman (though the comparison is not perfect, the nature of Pullman's daemons being dissimilar from standard notions of a familiar).
Familiars have appeared in several fantasy role playing systems, most notably as the companions of wizards and sorcerers in recent versions of Dungeons and Dragons.

Familiars usually assumed animal forms - cats, toads, owls, mice and dogs seem to have been the most common - though virtually any animal or insect could be suspected.
Throughout Africa, the wild creatures of the bush are said to be Witches' familiars: for the Lugbara, they are said to be the toad, snake, lizard, water frog, bat, owl, leopard, jackal and a type of monkey that screeches in the night; for the Dinka, they are fl cobras and hyenas.
The Zulus' familiars are said to be corpses dug up and re-animated with magic; they are sent out at on night errands to scare travelers with their shrieking and pranks.

Once per expedition, if the Familiar is in base contact with the Wizard, the Wizard may cast one of his spells without having to expend a spell component, by drawing upon the Familiar's energy.

Under the 3.5 rules the Familiar can attack and the this is worked out the same as for 3.0 using the base creatures stats and the Familiar's Dexterity or Strength (whichever is greater) bonus to get the mellee attack bonus.
All of the talk about how we're handling familiars is speculative - but my current plan is that they give their master appropriate skill bonuses, scouting abilities, plus a cool extra or two I don't want to mention (in case we don't have time to implement those bits).
Familiars would be treated as non-combatants and can't attack anyone, but on the plus side they can't be attacked in return.
