Family members should try to measure their actions against the motto, to challenge themselves to live up to their life's message.
Families as well as farms have distinguishing traits of character, and there are always some of these on which a family prides itself.
Such a motto would be a help in keeping the family up to standard by giving the members a cause for pride in it and what it represents; it might even be a help in raising the standard of family life and honor.

I once had a professor in college who told us that he and his wife had chosen a motto for their family: "Do what love requires." They tried to measure their behavior against this motto, to challenge themselves to live up to it.
Motto may be a corny word, but it points to something deep: The Meaning of Life.
A motto of, "What can I bring to this world that I’m a part of?" will lead to vastly different choices than "What’s the world done for me today?" "Less is more" will produce a different family than "He who dies with the most toys wins."

In common is that the WYSE and WYSEMAN Anglo-Saxons of Scotland used the same family motto "He is wise who is wise of God" and near identical Arms emblazoned with charges in numbers of three, throughout lower Scotland, and in Greston, York and Essex, England.
An example of the family's migration throughout England is that all the descendants of the famous High Sheriff of Devon, Sir Thomas Wise, KB, MP (d.1629), of Mount Wise, Plymouth, England link to the WISE House of Sydenham, of Devonshire, Wessex, England.
Sir Andrew Wyse was born in Greston, York, England, was of the WYSE family branch that established the Wise House of Greston in Devonshire, England, served in the 1171 infamous invasion of Ireland by the Earl of Pembroke Richard de Clare (Strongbow), and was granted lands in County Waterford, Ireland for his wartime services.

The earliest record of the family motto located to date is in "The British Herald" by Robson - published in 1808, although it must have been in use very much earlier.
