CONK! Encyclopedia: Family   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
A family is a domestic group of people, or a number of domestic groups affiliated by blood or by a variety of legal ties such as marriage, domestic partnership, adoption, surname and in some cases slavery as was the case in the Roman Empire.
From the perspective of children, the family is a family of orientation: the family serves to locate children socially, and plays a major role in their enculturation and socialization.
Sociologists distinguish between conjugal families that are relatively independent of the kindreds of the parents and of other families in general, and nuclear families which maintain relatively close ties with their kindreds.

A family is a domestic group of people, or a number of domestic groups linked through descent (demonstrated or stipulated) from a common ancestor, marriage or adoption.
In Western culture, a family is defined specifically as a group of people affiliated by blood or by legal ties such as marriage or adoption.
This kind of family is common where men desire to assert control over children, or where there is a sexual division of labor requiring the participation of both men and women, and where families are relatively mobile.

eMJA: Bain, Children with severe disabilities: options for residential care
While families were reported happy to have their children home, the care required was stressful, demanding, labour-intensive, constant, costly, tiring and mostly unacknowledged.
A NSW survey of 171 families of children under seven years with disabilities and high support needs found that 25% had either sought alternative residential care for their child or considered it might become necessary, particularly if the mother, as main carer, was unable to continue, or the child became larger and harder to manage.
Birth families often report that financial support available to foster carers to look after severely disabled children is not available to their parents to do the same.

 Same-Sex Partner Abuse
Abuse in relationships is any behavior or pattern of behavior used to coerce, dominate or isolate the other partner.
Shelters for abused women may not be sensitive to same-sex abuse (theoretically, shelters are open to all women and therefore, a same-sex victim may not feel safe as her abuser may also have access to the shelter).
In lesbian and gay male relationships, there may be additional fears of losing the relationship which confirms one's sexual orientation; fears of not being believed about the abuse and fears of losing friends and support within the lesbian/gay communities.
