Famous Funnies has the reputation of having been the first comic book.
Famous Funnies was the brainchild of Maxwell C. Gaines, who, like a great many Americans of the time, badly needed income.
Famous Funnies outlasted most of its comics-reprinting competitors, including Popular Comics (Smilin' Jack, Terry & the Pirates), King Comics (Popeye, The Little King) and Sparkler Comics (Nancy, The Captain & the Kids).

Famous Funnies (more accurately referred to as Famous Funnies: Series I) was a 68-page comic that was distributed to the public through department stores and had a cover price of 10 cents.
Half its pages were reprinted from Funnies on Parade, 16 were reprinted from the previously published Carnival of Comics and the remaining 16 pages were "new" reprints of popular Sunday strips.
Famous Funnies #1 was the start of a bi-monthly publication that would become the first regularly published comic-book series sold on newsstands.

It is the famous severed snake that represents the United States with the legend "Join, or Die." Benjamin Franklin created so many things that are still in common use today; however, its very doubtful that he knew he would be the pioneer for comic books.
One year later "Famous Funnies" began its twice a month printing and distribution routine through news stands; however, it took several issues before Eastern Color Printing saw any profit.
The path from "funnies" to graphic novels was a slow one that only took place because their were a few creators out there that said "Let's try something new." Prince Namor was a clear example of this.

Most publishers were experimenting with the form in the '30s, and the next breakthrough was Funnies on Parade (1933), the first standard-size comic book (filled with comic-strip reprints), available for coupons clipped from Proctor and Gamble products.
Finally, Eastman produced the all-new Famous Funnies (1934), widely recognized as the first true "comic book," as it was produced solely for its own sake and distributed like a magazine.

Eastern was always on the lookout for jobs, and in 1934 Gaines and Wildenberg persuaded the company to do a run of "Famous Funnies #1," a compilation of reprints of Sunday comic strips.
"Famous Funnies" was 32 pages long and cost a dime; it sold 35,000 copies and was an instant hit.
(A near-mint copy of "Famous Funnies" is now valued at $22,500.) A few years later, Gaines introduced the first comic book superhero: Superman.

ECP followed in May with Famous Funnies #1, Series 2, the first monthly comic book to be sold on newsstands.
Like Famous Funnies, Popular Comics material consisted of reprinted color newspaper strips--old favorites like Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, and Gasoline Alley--but Gaines made sure his reprints were brighter.

By 1934 these give-away comics were so successful, Max Gains became convinced that youngsters would buy these books for ten cents, and that they would compete nicely in the marketplace with "Little Big Books" that were also selling on newsstands.
Eastern Colors ran off 35,000 copies of "Famous Funnies, Series 1" at 64 pages of reprint Sunday funnies to be distributed through Dell Publishing Company to be sold in chain stores for ten cents a copy.
"…Series 1" was so successful it was followed by "Famous Funnies #1" which became the first monthly comic magazine.
