 Airstream Forums - Fan Clutch
Besides aiding in cooling, the fan clutch also is a 'spacer' moving the fan blades in the proper position relative to the fan shroud.
The fan clutch is mounted to the waterpump and the fan blades are mounted to the clutch, moving the blades 1 1/2" from the pump towards the radiator.
It is possible to pull the fan clutch, by first unbolting fan from the clutch and then unbolting the clutch from the water pump.

Info and facts on 'Fan clutch'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Fan Clutch refers to an automatic device frequently used in automotive (additional info and facts about automotive) cooling systems.
However, if engine temperature climbs beyond the clutch's pre-determined setting, the fan becomes fully engaged, thus maintaining or lowering engine temperature.
Most fan clutches are viscous (additional info and facts about viscous) or "fluid" couplings combined with a bi-metallic sensory system similar to that in a thermostat (A regulator for automatically regulating temperature by starting or stopping the supply of heat).

Electrically actuated viscous fan clutch - Patent 4271945
When fan operation is no longer required, the electromagnet is automatically deenergized so that an internal spring moves the valve member to a closed position to terminate the supply of viscous fluid to the clutch to increase clutch slippage and establish the disengaged mode of clutch operation.
Adjacent portions of the clutch plate 58 and the rear wall member 32 are provided with torque-transmitting elements consisting of cooperating annular ridge and groove elements 62 and 64, respectively, with an intervening fluid shear space 66 therebetween to accommodate a suitable viscous fluid, such as silicone, as a torque-transmitting medium.
As is well known to those skilled in the fluid clutch art, upon rotation of the clutch plate 58 by the input shaft 16, via the pulley 14, torque is transmitted to the adjacent housing or output member 30 by the shear action of the fluid medium in the operating chamber 60.

The main fan is a 15" diameter viscous clutch fan that is mounted to an engine-driven pulley.
The clutch fan is held onto the pulley studs by four nuts.
The fan was wired up so that it was triggered by a second relay (I had a spare relay handy) when the A/C is switched on or when the engine temperature reaches 220*F. You can add a switch to operate the fans manually if you wish, but I didn't apply that option.

Radiator Fan Blade And Fan Clutch - OEM Quality
The cooling fan, or sometimes called the radiator fan, can be located on either side of the radiator and may either be operated by an electric motor or a fan clutch that is driven by the water pump belt.
The cooling fan switch is a thermostatically controlled electrical switch that is usually located in the radiator or in the thermostat housing and will turn on the radiator fan when the coolant reaches a predetermined temperature.
The fan clutch or radiator fan clutch uses the engine temperature to engage or disengage the radiator fan and is located on the front of the water pump.

Basically, the advantage of the fan clutch is a very small HP increase because there is no draw of power from the engine.
You have two choices: Installing the fan directly onto the radiator (I would not advise to use the through the radiator straps, these fans are heavy and in time will bend the fins and the fan will sag) or installing it onto the fan shroud.
To remove the fan shroud, there is two plastic pins on each side of the radiator that you have to remove.

A thermal clutch operates in the same fashion as the regular clutch under normal operating conditions, but it has a bimetallic coil (similar to that in the carburetor choke housing) that opens a valve at higher temperatures and causes more drag.
