Cancellation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Handmade cancels were typically carved from cork and are known in a bewildering variety of creative designs, collectively known as fancy cancels. Pen cancels may still occasionally be seen (sometimes done with marker), typically when a postal clerk notices that a stamp has not been touched by the automated machinery (though there have sometimes been complaints by stamp collectors of redundant pen cancels by overzealous postal employees). Fancy cancel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The era of fancy cancels came to an end in the 1890s, when the Post Office Department issued new regulations standardizing the form of cancellations. Their "Waterbury Running Chicken" cancel, perhaps a turkey since it appeared close to Thanksgiving of 1869, was in use for only a few days and is now the most prized of all 19th century cancels, with covers fetching very high prices. My comments on stamp condition and Fancy Cancels As I said above, fancy cancel collectors will keep stamps that other collectors will reject. A common cancel unusually well struck becomes a premium item. Alphabetilately: H is for Handstamp - a Fancy Cancel is a form of killer that was popular for a while in the 19th century, with an elaborate design depicting an animal, a bird, a geometrical figure, etc. But there was a period, in the early days of stamps in this country (until 1890), when local postmasters were permitted to create their own cancels, and many of them took advantage of the opportunity to create very fanciful designs, by whittling the ends of corks, or small blocks of wood. John W.
