  Fandom - Encyclopedia Dramatica
Fandom has existed for at least a hundred years, though prior to the advent of the Internets it was popularly referred to as "religion."
The oldest fandom still existing in the modern world is, of course, Judaism, whose members, called "Jews," are obsessed with one of the first known pieces of fanfic, called the Tanakh, which was primarily about eating Aryan babies.
Conflict between these sundry fandoms typically resulted in war and other lulz (such as the Holocaust), particularly between members of the same fandom who disagreed over the treatment of a canon character, OTP or whatever in a piece of fan- or slashfic.

 NCF GUIDE: sf FANDOM
Fandom in those days was an intimate affair, where everyone knew (or knew of) everyone else, and the distinction between fan and professional writer was often blurred.
Fandom's traditions were recorded and handed down through fanzines, and even club fans were literate and active in fanzine circles.
While the literate and civilized nation of fandom eyed the booming population of Trekdom with a good deal of trepidation, peaceful coexistence and some limited immigration were the order of the day.

 Fandom
Fandom (from the noun fan and the affix -dom, as in kingdom, dukedom, etc.) refers to a community of keen aficionados who share a common interest in any phenomenon, such as authors, hobbies, genres or fashions.
Fandom as a term can also be used to refer to the single interconnected network of these individual fandoms, many of which overlap.
The term "fandom" is particularly associated with fans of the science fiction and fantasy genres, a community that dates back to the 1930s and has held the World Science Fiction Convention since 1939.

 Fandom - SCIFIPEDIA
Fandom is the name given to the various activities that involve fans and supporters of SF and related genres.
Fandom includes amateur publications, known as fanzines; organized gatherings, known as conventions; and local clubs, which organize meetings and activities in support of their interest in genre publications, performers, and media events.
Conventions range in size from those whose attendees number in the dozens to those with thousands of con-goers, and can be the result of the labor of local club members or professionally run media events.

Who owns fandom? - Salon   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Though the dictionary definition of "fandom" dates the word back to 1903, it first gained prominence in the 1930s, when readers who had letters published in sci-fi and fantasy magazines began writing to each other.
First Fandom's idealism may seem quaint today, but to Fandom.tv's Carol Burrell, it is the rule, and Fandom.com's commercial homogeneity is the exception.
So-called genre fandom, therefore, promotes the view that all people have a stake in the storytelling, and corporate monoliths such as Fandom.com threaten not only individual freedom, but discourage the kind of creative discourse that has driven the fan community for decades.

 What is fandom?
fandom can be defined or explained as the state of being a fan or all that encompasses fan culture and fan behavior in general, or the study of fans and fan behavior.
Each decade thereafter, such a phenomenon became a staple of fandom, so much so that the objects of such fandom have been branded "teen idols" of their day, from David Cassidy in the 70s to the New Kids on the Block in the 80s to Hanson, Backstreet Boys, and N Sync in the present day.
This kind of fandom is a type of institution, so to speak, in and of itself, characterized not only by the above mentioned behavior, but also apparent by the various industries profiting from it.
