A fanfare is a short piece of music played by trumpets and other brass instruments, frequently accompanied by percussion, usually for ceremonial purposes.
Fanfares originated in the Middle Ages; although popular depictions of ancient Rome frequently include fanfares, the evidence is slight.
In 18th century France the fanfare was a movement with energy and repetition of notes, and fanfares of the modern description date from the 19th century, when they were composed for British coronations (such as Hubert Parry's I was glad for Edward VII) and other important occasions.

Fanfare for St Edmundsbury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fanfare for St Edmundsbury is a piece of music written by the British composer Benjamin Britten for a "Pageant of Magna Carta" in the grounds of the young cathedral at Bury St Edmunds in 1959.
The parts are notated as if for modern trumpets in C; however, they are actually written using only the notes of three different harmonic series based on F, C and D and could thus be performed on three natural trumpets in those three keys.
As the last playthrough progresses it gradually dawns on the listener that a unity is emerging from the chaos as the long notes start to settle and overlap: by the last few bars the three trumpets are playing triumphant block chords together.

The same is true of Britten’s Fanfare for St Edmundsbury, which is actually three fanfares played consecutively.
Composer Stanley Friedman turns his Antiphonia IV into a pitch study with a melismatic effect and a singularity of tension throughout whilst Plog’s Duets are variously flourish-laden and muted, calm and sensitive and strikingly interjectory with jagged motifs by the second trumpet adding jazzy syncopations to the line.
Of Stevens’ The Moudon Fanfares the most striking was the second, Fanfare B.I.M, with its "waspy" pitches, a piece that thrives on fractiousness and division.

What was even better was they all played together in a concert Sunday night to conclude the three-day festival described by UW-L trumpet teacher David Cooper as "my dream." It was a fantastic concert which drew a standing-room-only crowd in Toland Theatre.
It was a standing ovation right away when Herseth, Severinsen and Lazarus joined together in Benjamin Britten's "Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury." They were joined by four other trumpet players, including Cooper and Robert Dorer and Craig Hara, both from the Minnesota Orchestra, in "Fantasia for Seven Trumpets," and the crowd went wild.
Severinsen, known as the flamboyant Grammy award-winning music director of Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show,'' said he wanted to come to the UW-L trumpet festival because his mentor and one of the most prominent trumpeters in the country, Herseth, was sharing his talents in master classes.
