Fangataufa, a much smaller atoll, is located 41 kilometers southsoutheast of Moruroa.

The report found that the terrestrial and aquatic environments of the Mururoa and Fangataufa atolls that are accessible to people contain residual radioactive material attributable to the nuclear experiments, but generally at very low concentrations that the report concluded were of no radiological significance.

Although the volume of underwater slope undergoing active deformation in the northeast-rim region of Fangataufa appears to be smaller than that at Mururoa, it seems prudent to attempt to estimate the volume involved, continue to monitor the deformations and assess the potential for a serious underwater collapse.

THE RADIOLOGICAL SITUATION AT THE ATOLLS OF MURUROA AND FANGATAUFA
A main finding of the Study's sampling and surveillance campaign is that concentrations of residual radioactive material present in the accessible environment of the atolls are in general very low.
The Study concluded therefore that neither remedial actions nor continuing environmental monitoring at Mururoa and Fangataufa are needed on radiological protection grounds.
