A view of the edge of Fangorn Forest at a different location can be seen from the orc mound, where the Riders of Rohan killed and cremated the orcs after Merry and Pippin escaped into Fangorn.
Later Mina and Stefanie had their pictures taken inside the forest where Treebeard stomped the orc that wanted to eat the hobbits..

I think the author is missing a major cause of the decline of the great forests of Eriador.
They mined the forests, much as American loggers of the last century mined ours.

Inside the dark forest it is almost impossible for Aragorn to follow the hobbits tracks and the huge forest waits eagerly to consume these three trespassers.
When Gimli lifts his axe the trees rustle expectantly, waiting for the trading of blows to begin, Legolas notes that the trees are alive and that they should be careful in these woods.
