On some islands all kaainga worshipped the same spirit, and on others a number of spirits--the shark, turtle, stingray, fl noddy or various other kinds of fish and birds --were recognized by each group of worshippers, who were forbidden to kill or eat their totem.

Fanning is roughly 15km long N-S and 10km E-W, and is dominated by the large lagoon.
The island is inhabited by ~3000 Kiribati natives who were very welcoming and patient with the "crazy foreigners" (as we referred to ourselves) who came from America to drill rocks in their yards.

I went to "fanny" island in may of 2003 and it was beautiful we went on a bike ride and enjoyed it so much.
Fanning Island may be a near distant memory - NCL is working with the Government to have the "Jones Act" not apply to NCL ships.

The island is neat and tidy, and every house is made of local materials.
The resident customs officer is very strict and will not allow anything to be landed without his permission, although we did break the law and gave some T-shirts to some local friends, which he strongly objected to.
The islanders are extremely welcoming and it is a pleasure to just walk through the neat villages, or cycle (we borrowed cycles from the policeman and customs officer) along the west side of the atoll made up of several smaller islands linked by bridges or causeways.
