Her sister, Fanny Waterman, is one of the world’s most distinguished piano teachers and is also the founder of the Leeds International Piano Competition, which is ranked among the top four most prestigious piano competitions in the world, along with the Van Cliburn, the Tchaikovsky and the Queen Elizabeth international piano competitions.
Waterman served as a guide to the work’s more significant features, the piece itself is only of moderate interest, and the question that nagged me was whether the piece would have been on the program at all had it had been written by a composer other than Bach.
Waterman’s gracious acknowledgment of her status as equal partner, and a mention before the Piazzolla encore that she was a native of Brazil that we would have gleaned any information about her at all.

Fanny Waterman (born in Leeds in 1920) showed musical promise at a very early age and, very fortunately, both parents gave Fanny great encouragement as she showed great passion and flair for the piano.
Until the mid 1970s, the Leeds competition had survived financially, mainly through the determined efforts of Fanny Waterman herself with the support of her loyal and dedicated team of volunteer helpers and the generosity of that energetic organisation - the Friends of the LIPC.

 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition 2003
The 2003 competition, sponsored by the Halifax, is the 14th and this year marks the 40th anniversary of the world famous event, which was founded by Fanny Waterman and Marion Thorpe.
The £30,000, which was raised by the Friends by a variety of events from coffee mornings to concerts, will be used towards the accommodation costs of the 90 competitors at Tetley Hall, a University of Leeds hall of residence in Headingley.
Commenting on the donation, Fanny Waterman said: "We are thrilled and most grateful to the Friends and many supporters from Leeds and all over the world who have raised this wonderful amount of money.
