University of Chicago Professor Emeritus Ugo Fano, whose pioneering contributions to the theory of atomic and radiation physics helped lead to the development of the gas laser and the use of radiation in medical diagnosis and therapy, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at a nursing home in Chicago.
Fano dedicated much of his work to achieving a better understanding of the dynamics of atoms and molecules and the way they interact with light, electrons and each other.

In Memoriam - Ugo Fano, Ph.D.
Ugo Fano was born to Rosa Cassin and Gino Fano (1871-1952), professor of mathematics at Turin, Italy, specializing in differential geometry.
Fano’s American career began with pioneering work in 1940-1944 in what was later to be called radiation biology with M. Demerec and others, at the Department of Genetics of the Carnegie Institution at Cold Spring Harbor.
Fano’s two decades at NBS saw prolific and outstanding contributions to two major areas of research: radiation physics and the basic physics of atoms, molecules, and condensed matter.

 Introduction to the Fano Algorithm
The fano algorithm is a well known algorithm in communication theory and its efficient implementation is the topic of one of a joint research project between myself, Antonio Ortega, and Keith Chugg.
The fano algorithm uses a concept of a threshold T that it dynamically adjusts to help it decide which way to move during the search.
Fano made the observation that a node is visited for the first time iff (a) it just satisfies the threshold, i.e., it violates the threshold tightened by delta or (b) it was entered via a forward move from a node, call it "node_b", that just satisfies the threshold itself.

University of Chicago Professor Emeritus Ugo Fano, whose pioneering contributions to the theory of atomic and radiation physics helped lead to the development of the gas laser and the use of radiation in medical diagnosis and therapy, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on Tuesday,
A prime example of Fano's ability to analyze experimental data was the paper he wrote about the spectra -- the distinctive electromagnetic radiation appearing at particular wavelengths -- of the hydrogen molecule measured by Gerhard Herzberg, who would later receive the Nobel Prize in chemistry.
Fano's memory may be made to the University of Chicago, Ugo Fano Fund (for the care and nurturing of graduate students), c/o Mary Heagley, Division of the Physical Sciences, The University of Chicago, 5747 South Ellis Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637.

Fano and Fermi additionally discovered a way to slow and harness the energy of neutrons by use of a light element moderator, work which Fano took further while Fermi focused on atomic division and fission energy.
Fano's work, however, which did not deal with fission energy, was much more benign, and he became considered a forerunner if not a founder of modern theoretical atomic physics.
Fano's work on the development of gas lasers and directed radiation proved invaluable to medical sciences, and are still widely employed in cancer treatment.

Guido Alberto Fano began studying music at the age of nine, under the guidance of Vittorio Orefice, choir master and conductor in Padua, who gave him his first piano lessons and who brought him into contact with stage-life and with directing orchestras and choirs.
During these years he met Arturo Toscanini, who, according to Fano's own memoirs said about his compositions: "This music deserves to be known, and I want to be the first at conducting and spreading it"; but, unfortunately, this project never came off.
Instead, he was planning to leave his job as a piano teacher at the "Liceo Musicale" in Bologna and to organize a big concert tour in Europe.
