  Plank - Fantasia Festival
Fantasia is seen as one of the most important fantasy, horror, and anime festivals in the world, with fans that truly define the word “fanatic.”
When Fantasia re-launched in 2003 after a one-year hiatus, they needed to bring their website to the next level; to have it work for them as the key element of their marketing strategy and as a tool to provide fans with ever-changing festival information as it happens.
Fantasia’s website has evolved into a dynamic and stylish site loaded with tons of rich information about the roughly one hundred films shown every year, all of it presented with a focus on ease of navigation.

  Fantasia (1940)
Fantasia (1940), a Disney animated feature-length "concert" film milestone, is an experimental film integrating eight magnificent classical musical compositions with enchanting, exhilarating, and imaginative, artistically-choreographed animation.
Fantasia 2000 was the first feature-length animated film released in the IMAX format.
As the film begins, musicians (cellists, violinists, brasses, wood-winds, etc.) of the Philadelphia Orchestra (to be conducted by Leopold Stokowski, the orchestra's conductor from 1912 to 1938) are displayed in shadow and color and are silhouetted against a blue backdrop in the opening as they take their accustomed places and tune their instruments.

 Fantasia Review
Fantasia was an attempt to wed the film technology Disney had developed to the majesty of the great composers.
Fantasia impressively matches the animation to the mood of the music; Bach is represented with hulking abstractions while the Ponchelli sequence contains the high comedy of hippos, alligators, and ostriches performing a ballet.
Fantasia was far from universally hailed, and Disney soon retreated into less ambitious anthology films (such as Fun and Fancy Free) and reclaimed his position as the 20th Century's foremost reteller of great fairytales.

 Fantasia (1940)
Fantasia, one of the great achievements in animation, is a perfect example of the power created by these two mediums joining.
With Fantasia, he strayed from narrative films to try something different, and the movie is alive with his passion and the passions of its directors, animators, writers, musicians, and, of course, its featured composer geniuses, which include the likes of Bach and Stravinsky.
Fantasia is the stuff of dreams, and, with each sequence, we feel we have peeked at the private lives of these mythological creatures.

The film includes eight sequences: "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" (Bach), "The Nutcracker Suite" (Tchaikowsky), "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (Dukas), "Rite of Spring" (Stravinski), "Pastoral" (Beethoven), "Dance of the Hours" (Ponchielli), "Night on Bald Mountain" (Mussorgsky), and "Ave Maria" (Schubert).
The film was presented in Fantasound, an early stereo system devised at the Disney Studio, which required theaters to be specially equipped.
Renewed interest in the film in the 1970s led to a new soundtrack in 1982, with an orchestra conducted by Irwin Kostal and recorded in digital stereo.

FanTasia Film Festival TAKE ONE - Find Articles
Now in its eighth year, Montreal's FanTasia Film Festival is a geek convention, a Goth powwow, and, at its best, an energizing showcase of outrageously imaginative storytelling from around the world.
A must--see item at FanTasia, Ju--On's fragmented, nonlinear story focuses on various characters' experiences of the ectoplasmic contamination emanating from a house where a mother and son devolved into wrathful furies because of a violent trauma.
Also from Miike, FanTasia screened Gozu, a film that begins with a crazed gangster who hallucinates that a tiny Chihuahua is "a trained Yakuza attack dog" and smashes the hapless creature against a restaurant window.

This particular film is extremely uneven, the sequences lack the same cohesive style that held the original FANTASIA together, and the entire film is beset by a series of often obnoxious "celebrity" introductions that give the film the feel of a made-for-TV variety show.
Disney originally saw FANTASIA as a film that could be re-released with a mix of old and new selections every few years, and the most interesting material on the "Legacy" disk is a restored "Clair de Lune" (made for and then cut from the original FANTASIA) and various storyboard ideas for future sequences.
Fantasia is a brilliant film...if it's all together as it had been during its initial VHS release.

 Fantasia 2000 (2000) - PopMatters Film Review
IMAX theaters use the world's largest film format (ten times larger than the 35mm frame used in most theaters) and because the pictures are so sharp, the screens so large, and the sound system so advanced, it is easy to feel like you are in the middle of the action.
This is why you won't find the film at some IMAX theaters — since many are attached to science or educational centers, and they use funds from IMAX movies to subsidize the centers, they just couldn't afford to run Fantasia 2000 under these circumstances (or they resented the restrictions).
Fantasia 2000's story lines are pretty standard Disney fare (relentlessly upbeat and tending toward "heartwarming") and the animation is very good, but "The IMAX Experience" is definitely the star.

"Fantasia 2004" by Timotei Centea - SMART-POPCORN.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The audiences, savvy and passionate, are far-removed from the mainstream, and react with refreshing candor: excellent film (and their sometimes-present cast and crew) receive standing ovations, disappointing entries are subject to repeated (and satisfying) heckling and booing, and moments of dark comedy and oddball occurrences are met with open minds (and often open mouths).
The film's greatest strength, however, is the surprisingly strong undercurrent of emotion that permeates every scene, and that erupts, in several startling scenes, through the excellent performances of the four lead players.
The effects of this decision are uniformly nefarious: instead of deriving gracefully from the film's limitations, the comedy here is overbearingly pushed upon the viewer, and instead of dazzling the viewer with exhilarating martial arts, the film delivers action sequences that, in their comic overtones, are tame and wholly unsatisfying.

In the end, the film's crowning achievement is definitely the way it treats the unfolding of a century as the mind treats memory: a whole entity fitted with hypertextual random access, allowing the drawing of elements from across its breadth into the simultaneity of lived experience.

Consequently, the film functions as a repetition of vignettes that ostensibly do no more than present her attempts to flesh out and understand her own anguish; whether she is sitting on train tracks, curled fetal-like in a bathtub in a flooded basement or playing with her life on the roof of her warehouse home.
The film is vigorously autobiographical in its telling of an aged, once great actor forced to compete with vapid young Turks and Hollywood silicone (he eventually decides the best way to deal with the competition is to murder it).
Before the film began, writer/director Kawasaki, still visibly moved by the adoring applause that greeted his entrance at the front the theatre, took pains to remind the audience that this film was in the tradition of the Japanese-Monster-Character-Rubber-Suit movies made most famous by Godzilla.

I am pleased to report that "Fantasia 2000" is awe-inspiring, entertaining, even touching at times -- all while maintaining that perfect blend between pictures and music that can almost make you weep, it's so beautiful.
It compares favorably to the more story-oriented masterpieces like "Beauty and the Beast." View it not as an introduction to classical music (though it may be suitable for that), but as a wonderfully fulfilling movie experience.
