Fantasia aficionados may not view Fantasia 2000 in the same way as the original (creatively, it is clearly a step down), but they will surely appreciate what the filmmakers have accomplished.
Fantasia 2000 was originally released in IMAX theaters, where watching it is a somewhat different experience than seeing it in 35mm in a regular multiplex auditorium.
Although the overall quality of Fantasia 2000 is considerably more variable than that of Fantasia, certain aspects of the experience are the same - namely, the ability to sit in a theater and listen to great music while being presented with a choreographed visual accompaniment.

Because so much of what is impressive about Fantasia 2000, or different from other Disney features, is dependent on the IMAX technology that makes one feel enveloped in the experience, it will be a less majestic experience on a regular screen.
Fantasia 2000's story lines are pretty standard Disney fare (relentlessly upbeat and tending toward "heartwarming") and the animation is very good, but "The IMAX Experience" is definitely the star.

In the end, it’s even possible Fantasia 2000 does a disservice to the compositions it spotlights; after all, I can recall what each sequence looks like, but I’ll be damned if I can remember the songs.

Fantasia 2000 Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Disney's 1940 classic "Fantasia" is updated for the millennium with seven new musical segments and is produced in the IMAX format.
In light of its initial flounderings, Walt's intention of making Fantasia an "organic" and evolving film that would periodically be updated with new animated vignettes fell by the wayside.
The former suffers from stilted, afternoon cartoon style animation, while the latter is a vapid attempt to redo the original Fantasia's "Night on Bald Mountain"/"Ave Maria" finale, with a milquetoast "Circle of Life" narrative replacing the original's stunning depiction of the precarious balance between evil and virtue.

Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path.
But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy.
The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation.

"Fantasia/2000" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
The first Fantasia was a box-office flop, only getting into the fl during its re-release 25 years after it first came out; the mildly obscure classical pieces and snippets of abstract animation didn't appeal to a mass audience until psychedelic images became more mainstream in the '60s.
Disney was originally going to have three segments from the original Fantasia in Fantasia/2000; time constraints cut that down to only "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," which translates better to the IMAX screen than some critics had hinted.
Stravinsky notwithstanding, the result of the original "Fantasia" was overwhelmingly Romantic, even if the composers were not technically from that period.) That said, the marriage of animation and music is a thing of beauty.
