Fantasound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantasound was an early stereophonic sound process developed by sound engineer William E. Garity and sound mixer John N.A. Hawkins for the Walt Disney studio in 1938-1940 for the motion picture Fantasia, making Fantasia the first commercial film with multichannel sound.
The idea for Fantasound came from Walt Disney himself, who was displeased with the quality of conventional optical motion picture sound recording and playback systems, and from conductor Leopold Stokowski, who had participated in experimental stereophonic recordings in 1932 and a live, long-distance demonstration of multichannel sound in 1933.
The transfer had taken place over special high-quality telephone lines, because the optical Fantasound equipment and the magnetic recording equipment were in separate buildings and could not be brought together.

The original prints for Fantasia featured soundtracks that were recorded in a process known as "Fantasound", a 4-track directional stereophonic system that was invented especially to record the soundtrack for this picture by RCA and the Walt Disney Studios technical team, led by William E. Garity.
Over 90 speakers were used for the playback of the Fantasound audio during the premiere of the film on 12 November 1940.
However, Fantasound was rather expensive for the theaters participating in the roadshow version to install, especially with the needed materials being hard to obtain as the United States prepared for possible participation in World War II.

By means of one switch which actuated a relay system, the sound was transferred from the Fantasound set-up to the emergency channel, making use of the standard sound-track on the picture film, the emergency amplifier, and the center-stage loud speaker.
The weight of a complete Fantasound equipment was approximately 15,000 lbs.; it was packed in forty-five cases and required one-half of a standard freight car space.

Speakers were installed by the Disney technicians -- their usual distributor, RKO, opted out and the studio handled the distribution of the film itself -- in the handful of theaters around the country where it played.
But it wasn't just stereo; it was "Fantasound." With stereo, care is taken to make it sound as though there's an orchestra installed just the other side of the movie screen; the sounds of the brasses always come from the same area of the screen, same for all the other sections of the orchestra.
But with Fantasound, this varied -- and the sounds of the various sections of the orchestra changed from speaker to speaker, however was best to suit the presentation at the moment.

Fantasound refers to the proprietary surround sound system used by Disney in the 1940's for the movie "Fantasia".
Disney's Fantasound technology created a surround sound field with left front, center front, right front, left rear and right rear channels.
The main soundtrack incorporated only the front three channels; the two rear channels were recorded on a separate reel of film, and steered in separately when needed.

One concept that actually made it past the drawing boards was so-called Fantasound, an elaborate and expensive sound system.
Unfortunately, although Fantasound was used for the film's opening, the government stopped Walt from producing the necessary equipment -- claiming that national defense priorities had a higher call on the necessary technology.
Not only was "Fantasia" put into general release with a standard sound track, Walt was forced by his distributors at RKO to cut it from 125 to 81 minutes (losing much footage of Deems Taylor's narration).

In 1940 Disney produced "Fantasia," a marriage of animation and classical music, and insisted it be shown only in his new process Fantasound, which used an assembly of 64 speakers that gave audiences their first experience of what is now familiar as "surround sound." The experiment was a disaster.
His original plan for "Fantasia" was to constantly renew the film, adding fresh segments, warehousing old ones, showing it in Fantasound as a sort of classical repertory for moviegoers.

Actually a device of substance, Fantasound was the first multi-track soundtrack with the sound being recorded on a separate 35 mm piece of film as three optical soundtracks and a fourth track that was used to control the overall sound.
This was fed to a huge set of special amplifiers and crossovers that fed several speakers situated around the audience and the more traditional behind-the-screen positions.
The incredible expense and difficulty in setting up the equipment for a single movie meant that Fantasound was only seen at a few select auditoriums around the country, which definitely earns it a place on this list.

At a time when stereo recording was still just an experiment at Bell Labs, Disney recorded Stokowski and the Philly Orch using four or more different tracks (all on separate film reels) for a multi-dimensional audio experience.
