The Fantastic Baggys were a surf and hot rod group, created by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri.
The studio group released several successful singles under the leadership of Sloan and Barri, most well-known for the more popular duo Jan and Dean.
Under the name The Fantastic Baggys, they released one album internationally, Tell 'Em I'm Surfin' (1964) on Imperial Records, several hit singles and several albums only in South Africa.

The similarity of the Fantastic Baggys [+] material to Jan and Dean [+] in particular should come as no surprise, since Sloan [+] and Barri not only wrote some songs for Jan and Dean [+], but also did some vocals on Jan and Dean [+] records of the era.
The Fantastic Baggys [+] did one album for Imperial in 1964, Tell 'Em I'm Surfin', as well as three singles in 1964 and 1965 (which included three non-LP songs); there were also a couple of Fantastic Baggys [+] albums issued in South Africa.
The Fantastic Baggys stopped making records in 1965, when the surf fad faded and Sloan [+] and Barri were more interested in writing and singing more serious and sophisticated material.

Since the Fantastic Baggys were an untested quantity, Sloan and Barri did not always reserve their best songs for themselves.
Since Jan and Dean were the Baggys' labelmates, the two groups often shared backing tracks, with the Baggys laying their own vocals over a track originally recorded by Jan and Dean, and vice versa.
It was when the rumor got out that the Baggys were doing their Picasso Blue Period; basically, the Baggys were now going to go into the essence of surfing.

The Fantastic Baggys were a LA studio project by PF Sloan and Steve Barri.
Two additional Fantastic Baggys albums were released in South Africa, consisting mostly of songs by the like-named South African group, with a few leftover cuts by the real Baggys.
The last two Baggys albums were commercial flops as the band failed to keep pace with the public's shifting musical tastes.

In addition to the dozen or so Baggys songs, there are bonus cuts of other Sloan-Barri songs that were recorded under different names.
There was an EMI CD comp about 10 years ago (I don't know if it's still in print) with really bad new mixes, so I would go for the Sundazed version; it has the older extreme stereo mixes that, while not as good as the original mono versions, still capture the feel pretty well.
So the company managed to almost steal a Sloan-Barri track from the US studio (all they could get was one), which they released, and then filled the album with eleven more of the sound-alike band, and made a third Fantastic Baggies album in South Africa.

The Fantastic Baggys were studio musicians and writers Steve Barri and P.F. Sloan.
I forget what Jan and Dean album it is on, but "Move Out Little Mustang" is just the Fantastic Baggys, without Jan and Dean at all.
There's still fun to be had, I would guess, just by the sheer volume of stuff coming out...but a lot of it you gotta dig for or hope a friend hears it and clues you in, otherwise you miss out.

In reality they were a mythical band - it was only Phil Sloan and Steve Barri, and they only played one gig as The Fantastic Baggys (opening for Jan & Dean) in their career.
They became an incredible songwriting duo and were convinced by Lou Adler to package themselves as a real band so they could release their songs in an LP.
This CD has 28 songs - everything that was recorded as The Fantastic Baggys.

Although packaged and promoted as a bona fide group, the Fantastic Baggys were actually an L.A. studio project by the duo of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri.

The Fantastic Bagggys, despite what you might gather from the photo on their CD cover, were just two studio musicians named Phil Sloan and Steve Barri.
On top of that, The Fantastic Baggys made only two live appearances: opening for Jan and Dean to an audience who went wild for them, and once on Lloyd Thaxton's TV show.
Okay, there are those who say "REAL surf music has to be instrumental." This CD proves them wrong.

Phil 'P.F.' Sloan and Steve Barri, known for writing 'SummerMeans Fun' for Bruce & Terry, recorded only one album as theFantastic Baggys, this album spotlights the entire 'Tell 'Em I'm Surfin' album along with 17 addirional tracks including rare singles, unreleased material and alternate versions.
Well, I first came across the Fantastic Baggys on an Austrailian import album anthology called Pebbles way back in the 70s.
The song was "Anywhere the Girls Are" and that song stuck with me. Not bad for a studio creation of Beach Boy band member Bruce Johnston and P.F. Sloan.
