  Fantasy Island
When I heard they were bringing back "Fantasy Island", I thought, "How is that going to work?" The original show, for me anyway, is such a touchstone of the late 70s and early 80s, I just couldn't see how it could be successfully resurrected in the late 90s.
Fantasy Island is an exclusive resort where a guest (for a price) can realize his or her dearest fantasy.
The basic fantasies haven't changed much from the morality tales of the old show, but the tone of the show made me feel like the guests stepping off of that bi-plane were Roarke's dinner.

Fantasy Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantasy Island is an American fantasy television series which ran from 1978 to 1984 on ABC television.
Often, the fantasies would turn out to be morality lessons for the guests, sometimes to the point of (apparently) putting their lives at risk, only to have Roarke step in at the last minute and reveal the deception.
Apparently these assistants were imprisoned on the island in order to pay off some debt, and sometimes hinting that they were in some kind of Limbo, but the series was cancelled midway through the first season and this subplot was never resolved.

The New Fantasy Island: First Look by Anthony Leong
At its best, the original "Fantasy Island" did have some interesting and poignant examinations of the life's complications, such as a favorite episode of mine that had a pregnant woman, certain to die giving birth, seeing the disheartening future in store for her unborn daughter.
But at its worst, "Fantasy Island" was an endless parade of washed-up TV stars engaged in cloying and annoying epiphany sessions.
In addition to the dire tone, being on Fantasy Island is a much more surrealistic experience (thanks to extensive use of special effects) than it was two decades ago.
