Fantasy fiction tends to draw upon a common set of creatures that are easily recognizable to fans of the fantastic genre and have some pre-determined traits.
Many fantasy worlds' humanoid species are referred to as "races".
This list does not include fantasy stories' names for species more properly included in other lists, such as Atani (Humans of Middle-earth) or Melnibonéans (Elves of Michael Moorcock's Elric cycle), nor does it include fictional races of humanity unless they are physiologically different enough to merit separate consideration.

Bestiary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Under the name bestiary comes a medieval book that is a collection of short descriptions of different real or imaginary animals, birds and even rocks that is often accompanied by a moralising explanation.
Bestiary animals were also found in church sculpture, where the familiar images would remind the viewer of the story and its allegorical meaning.
Bestiaries were particularly popular in England and France around the 12th century and were mainly compilations of earlier texts, especially the Physiologus and the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville.

 Blue Lamp Road: Uresia
Fantasy Bestiary employs some generalizations that are traditionally very useful - but Uresia is only quasi-traditional, so some of these don't translate very well.
They're not nomadic like the Fantasy Bestiary goblins (though some are forced to feel that way when the royal troops come along to burn their villages).
Use the Fantasy Bestiary undead stats as a good source for many kinds of necromantic Flunkies, dungeon threats, and background noise in a Yemite tavern.

BESM Fantasy Bestiary (and upcoming BESM books) is a step towards traditional fantasy roleplaying.
Furthermore, of the modern roleplaying genres, an anime-based one is the most likely place you'll find angels, demons (even non-tentacled ones), and occasional ghost, all quite at home in fantasy.
Likewise, if you don't plan to use traditional fantasy creatures in your games (or can design one yourself for the occasional appearance in a modern setting), you're best off spending your $15.95 elsewhere.

Sad but true, most creatures in a fantasy game have short lives, and meet their fate at the end of an adventurer's sword.
While this is situation is slowly improving, colorful and exciting battles nevertheless are a staple of fantasy roleplay, and probably always will be.

There were numberless "giant this" and "giant that," and an even greater number of "part this animal, part that animal." So I collected the most common patterns, and wrote what I consider to be the real core of GURPS Fantasy Bestiary -- the chapter on Mythological Motifs.
Most fantasy campaigns have a European flavor, and meeting creatures with names like "nyah-gwaheh" or "wu kung ching" doesn't synch very well.
