Superhero films also seem to fufil the requirements of the fantasy or science fiction genres, but they are usually considered to be a genre all their own.

Fantasy as a genre in film has existed since the beginning of films, although the offerings were sporadic until the 1980's, which saw a flourishing of the genre.

Fantasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantasy is a genre of art, literature, film, television, and music that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of either plot, theme, setting, or all three.
As a genre, fantasy is both associated and contrasted with science fiction and horror fiction.
Fantasy subgenres are numerous and diverse, frequently overlapping with other forms of speculative fiction in almost every medium in which they're produced.

Finally, the film confronts the audience with brutal horror: caught by two henchmen sent by a jealous husband, Vicente is castrated and enucleated to death.
These films were not necessarily good, but they were at least refreshing since, for most of the directors, the use and manipulation of horror elements was far from being their only aim.
Juran's desolate Croatian film, filled with images of physical as well as moral decadence, seems to be always on the verge of giving itself up to pure graphic horror with the introduction of themes such as illegal experiments on children and the possible resurrection of the dead.

The films of George Pal nourished the hungry imaginations of many a child, both big and little.
Arnold Leibovit’s 1985 documentary "The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal" is not so much a critical expose of Pal’s output as an unabashed fan letter, a "thank you" printed on celluloid rather than paper.
A photo and production art gallery is notable for the inclusion of Pal’s elaborate and opulent sketches for such films as "Time Machine" and "Grimm." An interview with Pal to promote his 1968 film "The Power" and home movies of Pal in Europe show Pal in a personable and inviting light.

The Fantasy Film Music of George Pal is an admirable showcase for that singular skill, spotlighting melodies from his last seven productions, released between 1958 and 1975.
Along with claims concerning Robert Wise and Ray Harryhausen, the liner notes boldly assert that "George Pal's movies stirred the youthful imaginations of Roddenberry, Lucas [and] Spielberg." It's a declaration that, while unattributed and arguably tenuous, is not altogether unfounded, especially considering the popular impact of Pal's bountiful SF output.
It's a shame that The Fantasy Film Music of George Pal doesn't contain tracks from the producer's seminal early efforts, such as Conquest of Space, Houdini and his many stop-motion "Puppetoon" shorts, but the 28 melodies that are present remain exciting, engaging and, on the whole, quite inspirational.

Until recently, fantasy as a group fell through the crack between these two camps, seen as neither profitable enough to dominate theater marquees, nor "artistic" enough to gain awards and public prestige.
For Western audiences, sword-and-sorcery films are archtypal of the fantasy genre, and they owe much to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, which practically invented the genre by merging together the various elements of English and Germanic mythology.
Films rooted in Arab mythology have included Arabian Nights (1942), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973), Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1979), Disney's excellent animated film Aladdin, and a recent well-done TV movie, also named Arabian Nights.
