The Pulp Companion: Who Is Fantomas?
There were four series of Fantomas novels, but the most famous series (and best, according to most critics) was the first, 32 novels by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain published monthly in Paris from February 1911 to September 1913.
Fantomas was hunted relentlessly by Inspector Juve, the only person who knows the threat Fantomas represents.
Fantomas was also brought to life in a silent U.S. serial in the 1920s, French films in the 1930s and 1940s, and in a series of James Bondish French films in the 1960s starring Jean Marais as the anti-hero.

 The Fantômas Website
Fantomas had more appealing companions at his hideout as well: his staff was comprised of beautiful miniskirted women named after the signs of the zodiac.
There was also an attempt to bring Fantomas up-to-date: in one episode Fantomas became involved in the investigation of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which led him (and a beautiful woman journalist) into the clutches of one of the factions of the Yugoslavian civil war.
Of course, by the end of the episode Fantomas had freed himself, rescued the woman, and destroyed the headquarters of the terrorist faction (though the terrorist mastermind survived, perhaps to reappear in a future episode).

Fantomas does not seem to be a man (spirit?) involved with politics of thought, but politics of consciousness.
In Juve Contre Fantomas there are scenes which allude to bondage and S&M. In one particular scene Juve establishes a trap for Fantomas in his apartment.
In the conclusion of "Juve Contre Fantomas" there is the magnificent image of Fantomas, dressed fully in fl with a hood over his face, raising his arms in characteristic joy as he explodes the house with what he thinks is Juve still inside the structure.

Fantomas stand with their feet planted horizontally across the soft dimensions of your face, warping the shape of your skull and shoulders with their off-color explosions.
As a follow-up to their 30-song debut, throughout which vocalist Mike Patton never formed a single actual word, Fantomas offer these 16 new creations, all realigned versions of film soundtracks, ranging from the notorious theme to Rosemary's Baby to the obscure and peculiar wank of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
First, most noticeably, are the even more varied vocal stylings; Patton's sweet croon on "Experiment in Terror" is nothing you've heard before from him on a Fantomas recording, along with many of the other croaking, spitting, pissing, screaming noises he excretes.

Fantomas' Agenda: Cartoons and April - Aversion.com
Fantomas is back at it, and is taking on the oddest challenge of its career: An album devoted jointly to paying tribute to cartoon music and the month of April.
The album, recorded by Patton at Los Angeles' The Sound Factory during the same sessions for Delirium Cordia last year, was written to imitate the style of cartoons' incidental music and theme songs.
Taking the disparate themes to the hilt, Fantomas is giving record collectors a doozy, designing the CD's packaging to tie in with its central ideas.

An original fact about this album is Fantomas was supposed to do a cover of "What A Feeling," which most of you know is from the movie Flashdance (which I never want to see, what a waste of time making that movie) but because of legal problems it couldn't be done.
he first Fantomas album was the soundtrack to a comic book, the second was a collection of songs from film soundtracks and the third was the soundtrack to my penis, so it's only appropriate that their fourth is the soundtrack to a non-existent horror film.

The spring of 1999 saw the release of Fantomas' self-titled debut album (the very first release on Patton's newly formed record label, Ipecac), which was followed by more touring.
By tour's end, Fantomas was briefly put on hold as its members returned to their other bands, but by early 2001, the quartet had recorded a second album.
The new studio material was put on the backburner, while Fantomas and Melvins performed together live as a seven-piece supergroup, "The Fantomas Melvins Big Band," releasing Millennium Monsterwork in April of 2002.

Fantomas brings together Melvin's guitarist Buzz Osbourne, one-time Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and bassist Trevor Dunn from Patton's long-running experimental project Mr Bungle--a line-up that should suggest something of the pretension, eccentricity and pure gut-churning heaviness that appears on this, their cinematically-conceptual second album.
It's the most accessible Fantomas record (so far anyway), and so would be a good starting point for those who might be put off if the self titled record or Delirium Cordia was the first Fantomas they heard.
If i tried to describe this CD i would say, not too unlistenable, like MR Bungle's "california" only a few more heavy death metal bits and is based on mostly horror themes (dodgy way of trying to describe it i know, but just try to imagine where i'm coming from :p).

The composition of a 1926 painting, The Threatening Murderer (L'assassin menacé), in which two criminals lie in wait for their victim on either side of a doorway, is taken from Louis Feuillade's third Fantômas film Le mort qui tue (The Murderous Corpse).
In his 1926 painting Man of the Open Sea (L'homme du large) he employs elements from the final image of Feuillade's second Fantômas film Juve contre Fantomas, in which the Man in Black raises his arms in triumph after throwing the lever that destroys a house in which Juve and Fandor are trapped.
In the story, entitled Fantomas contra los vampiros multinacionales (Fantomas versus the multinational vampires), the narrator (named Julio Cortazar) has been collecting testimony on human rights abuses in Latin America, including the 1973 CIA-sponsored coup in Chile against the democratically elected Marxist government of Salvador Allende.

 Fantomas - Suspended Animation - Featured review - Rocknworld.com
For those of you not familiar with Fantomas, a brief explanation is necessary: To the untrained ear, it sounds like chaos, yet to the trained music critic, it’s still chaos.
Yet, unlike the type of chaos that causes your cat to explode while your legs turn into jam for no reason, this is the type of chaos produced by a finely tuned group of musicians with discipline and control.
In Suspended Animation, Fantomas combines gnashing guitars with-light melodic moments and cartoon sound effects with ambient synthesis with real singing and vocal sound effects combined with noise combined with strings combined with samples from cartoons combined with more chaos perhaps combined with opera samples and…well, you get the point.

 Blogcritics.org: Fantomas - Delirium Cordia
What you will experience are Fantomas staples - speed riffing; ominous plodding basslines; Mike Patton's trademark vocal pyrotechnics - and a host of disturbing sounds inspired by (and possibly sourced from) the operating room environment.
Keep that word "disturbing" in mind - because that's exactly what this album is. This is seriously creepy stuff - between blasts of frantic Fantomas energy, you'll hear doctors discussing procedures, medical equipment, and other unidentifiable noises, and periodically the band will break in with a shocking amount of noise.
Other times, Fantomas explores the ambience, allowing the listener to settle in - but knowing Fantomas, you won't trust them because you know that peak of energy is coming.
