Topic: Fantomas (band)

In the News (Thu 16 Feb 12)

Fantômas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This Fantomas was a thief who committed spectacular robberies just for the thrill of it, and wore a white, skintight mask all the time or a variety of disguises so his true face was never shown.
Apparently the series was strongly influenced by the James Bond movies, as Fantomas, equipped with advanced technology created by a scientist called Professor Semo, had all kind of adventures around the World, and even fought other, more cruel criminals.
His mask in the comic book was clearly inspired by the fl mask worn by the Italian comic book criminal Diabolik, and his use of it was apparently influenced by the popular images generated by Mexican wrestling.

Millennium Monsterwork is basically a live album by one band (namely Fantomas) playing two bands' worth of material that encompasses both their own music and the music of The Melvins.
Fantomas itself is a quirky supergroup made up of avant-garde noise-man Mike Patton on vocals, Buzz Osborne (from The Melvins) on guitars, Trevor Dunn (from Mr.
The band is back to their usual stuff again in "Liquorton Gooksburg," an insane sonic contortionist piece that is both interesting and funny, and "Cape Fear," which is a dramatic metal piece that mixes organic atmosphere with musical intensity.

Fantomas, named after a villain in a series of pre-World War I French crime novels, is the brainchild of Mike Patton, who also has a vested interest in the band’s label as co-founder and co-owner.
The band’s latest release, Suspended Animation (due April 5), is a blistering mix of thirty tracks that are each named after a day in April.
In addition to Fantomas, bassist Trevor Dunn will be bringing his side project out on the road as well: Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant, a jazz trio that incorporates rock elements like power chords into their compositions.

Fantomas: Suspended Animation - PopMatters Music Review
Displaying an uncanny ability to continually pull the rug out from underneath their collective audience, it was anybody's guess as to what Fantomas would do next, and to their credit, they've done it again, taking their sound into yet another uncharted territory, and leaving us shaking our heads in the process.
Fantomas clearly pays homage to that onomatopoeic style of Stalling's, be it the ascending and descending notes that accompanied a tiptoeing Bugs Bunny, the ominous, bass-heavy chords that accentuated the stomp of a monstrous creature, or the slide Hawaiian guitar that marks the famous opening to the Looney Tunes theme.
The overall performance of the band is as mesmerizing as you'd expect, but what's especially impressive is how much the four members elevate their playing, providing evocative, ambient sounds, and then shifting abruptly into a wild combination of math rock and speed metal (perfectly exemplified by the uproarious "04/29/05").

I think Fantomas fans learned early on that things were going to be back-and-forth, cut-and-paste, and up-and-down.
Fantomas is really his vision, and he has a clear idea of songs and the structure of the record.
It did make things difficult for us in terms of scheduling and trying to be a consistent working band but I sort of appreciated it being just part-time because it allowed me to work in other groups and get involved with the jazz scene that was happening in San Francisco at that time.

You always hear singers of rock bands saying shit like, "I like to think of my voice as another instrument in the band," maybe to make themselves seem more artistic, but in the case of Patton's work in Fantomas, that's exactly the case.
Fantomas, however, is distinctly his band, as he writes and arranges all of the music, with little input from the other members.
Fantomas is a groundbreaking musical entity whose material will undoubtedly be puzzled over for years to come.

This new record also attests to the fact that as musicians, Incubus has found happiness and contentment in being a hard rock band that didn't feel the need to be the hardest, with the most strings tuned down, with the riffs that made the crowds bounce the highest.

Fantomas, the band as well as the album of the same name, is the brainchild of the brilliant and overlooked Mike Patton.
For example, Patton may start a song screeching while the band plays schizophrenically behind him, then suddenly the music is replaced by Patton playing samples and making noises with no other "instruments" playing.
Though Patton wrote all of the music, each band member's distinct playing style can be heard, such as Osbourne's sludgy guitar or Lombardo's double bass kit plowing through the mix.

Fantômas (the band)'s roots stem from the post-punk alternative metal scene, but deviate drastically from there.
The album, as with the band's recent European live sets, starts with the familiar and haunting strain of "The Godfather Theme." But just when we feel we are in a comfortable and familiar place, the band chimes in at full metal throttle in a free-form fury.
The band has another album in the works, expected to be out by 2002; it will be interesting to see if their third album retains the narrative stylistic quality of these adapted movie themes, or more closely resembles the reigned-in wildness of their first release.

Bands such as Jethro Tull, Van Der Graaf Generator and Family were defined by their vocalist's signature, some of them achieving great success especially in mainland Europe.
Bands that fall under the Zeuhl rubric vary from offshoot bands such as Weidorje and Zao, those with contemporary influence such as Eskaton, Potemkine and Eider Stellaire, to modern groups such as Xaal, Koenji Hyakkei, Ruins and Happy Family.
These bands are often considered close to the genesis of progressive metal or prog-metal due to their more overt inclusion of 70s symphonic rock influences in their style.

By tour's end, Fantomas was briefly put on hold as its members returned to their other bands, but by early 2001, the quartet had recorded a second album.
The band spent the remainder of 2001 touring behind the album, as Patton hinted that the group may go directly back into the studio by year's end to work on an album of all new material.
The new studio material was put on the backburner, while Fantomas and Melvins performed together live as a seven-piece supergroup, "The Fantomas Melvins Big Band," releasing Millennium Monsterwork in April of 2002.
