Roman temple - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pantheon became a Christian church in 607 and is now an Italian national monument, the burial place of Raphael and several of the kings of united Italy.
Nevertheless under the empire some of the imported cults, mainly from conquered people, such as the Persian Mithras and Egyptian divinities such as the mother-goddess Isis and Serapis (for his fanum the specific term serapeum was used) would gain great popularity, demonstrated in rich temple cults.
The temple of Isis and Serapis in the Campus Martius, built of Egyptian materials and in the Egyptian style to house the Hellenized cult of the Egyptian deity Isis, is typical of the heterogeneity of later Roman religious monuments.

south of the wall that was to be built several decades later, the Vienne fanum was established in a vast space between a steep slope and a stone paved road.
This area, progressively surrounded by groups of habitations which, although they later formed layers of between 2 and 4 metres thick as the result of successive demolitions and reconstructions, remained at their original level throughout the entire Roman period.
The other buildings constructed below level on the narrow strip that separated the fanum from the road, probably were involved in the running of the sanctuary.

He was surprised to find how popular the Phantom (or the Fanum, as he pronounced it) was in India and a little taken aback - and here, I pause to blow my own trumpet - to find as dedicated a fan as myself in Bombay.
"It's a great feeling," he told me. "Because you know, the Fanum is really set in India." I didn't have the heart to tell him that they would hit him with jhadoos in Calcutta if they heard about the skull cave and the pygmies of Bengal.
But my heart went out to the old man, cheated by Batman of the recognition that was his due in his own country, looking desperately for a reason to find significance in the Indian response.

Amabili: there appears to be an extra stroke after m which suggests the reading amiabili, but such a name is not attested and an earlier photograph makes it clear that this is an offset.
ad fanum: this might refer to a local shrine and its guard or caretaker (who might perhaps be a civilian, compare the use of non-military personnel to man watchtowers in Egypt, O.Flor., pp.25-6).
Alternatively, it is worth considering whether it might be a reference to Fanum Cocidii (we note that Caesar, BC 1.11.4 refers to Fanum Fortunae as Fanum).
