The curlews are a group of 8 wading bird species, characterised by a long slender downcurved bill and mainly brown plumage with little seasonal change.
Curlews feed on mud or very soft ground, searching for worms and other invertebrates their long bills.
The Upland Sandpiper[?] is an odd bird which appears to be closely related to the curlews.

The Far Eastern Curlew Satellite Project was initiated after discussions held at the 8th Conference of the Japan-Australia Migratory Bird Protection Agreement held in Queensland, Australia, in 1995.
The Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) is a migratory shorebird which generally inhabits sea and lake shore mud flats, deltas and similar areas, where it forages for crabs and other crustaceans, clam worms and other annelids, molluscs, insects and whatever else it can dig out of the mud with its long, downward-turned bill.
Far Eastern Curlew numbers are currently in decline.

Two other species of Curlew have occurred in the Pribilofs, the Bristle-thighed Curlew and the Far Eastern Curlew.
Far Eastern Curlews are substantially larger and longer billed and lack the distinctive crown stripes of Whimbrels.

The appropriately-named Happy Island, situated on the Gulf of Bohai in eastern China, is now widely accepted as being one of the best places in Asia to observe eastern Palearctic migrants as they travel to and from their breeding grounds in northern China and eastern Siberia.
Far Eastern Curlew and Terek Sandpiper are but two of the shorebirds that should be encountered, while both Saunders's and Relict Gulls occur in small numbers.
A wonderful tour for seeing Eastern Palearctic migrants, often at very close range, for those who are willing to cope with the modest living conditions on Happy Island in order join those privileged few who have experienced this ultimate Asian migration ‘hot spot' at its best.

 BirdForum - "orientalis" Curlew?
Some female curlews can have huge bills and i've have often been confused by distant 'curlews' in Indo and Oz that i couldn't do between Far Eastern and Eurasian on bill size but then again I'd probably been on the beer the nite before and am a bit crap at the best of times.
Nominate arquata (most of Europe) and orientalis (Siberia) are western and eastern extremes respectively of continuous cline of increasing bill and tarsus length, less heavy marking, and paler ground colour towards east.
Tom, ours here are much more heavily streaked on the sides-- they are difficult to separate from Far Eastern Curlew until I can get a good look at the rump or undertail coverts (or underwings, if it flies).

 Birdwatching Trip Report from South Korea
According to some, identification of dark-phase first year birds can be far from straightforward.
Kamchatka Gull Larus (canus) kamtschatschensis.  Although separation from heinei Common Gull is apparently far from straightforward, Kamchatka Gulls are considered reasonably widespread.  Peak of 10 at Song Do on 8th.
Eastern Rook Corvus frugilegus pastinator.  Recorded on 4 dates, with 1 000+ at the Han-Imjin the maximum.

"...it's a Far Eastern." We were there and had it in the scope in minutes.
Earlier, Jason had spotted a small gray sandpiper, but it was too far away for a positive ID. Now we were walking around the lagoon but weren't finding anything new.

The Far Eastern Curlew breeds in Siberia, and winters, predominately, in Australia.
This magnificent species, the 2nd largest of the New World Psittacine, is one of the rarest of Neotropical birds, having a limited distribution in wet lowlands from eastern Honduras to western Colombia, with a very small isolated population (of less than 2 dozen birds) in western Ecuador.
Not far from the Baikal Teal, on Little Cayman Island (10 miles long and 1 mile wide), and certainly more expected there, were numerous Red-footed Boobies (of both color morphs) and Magnificent Frigatebirds at their breeding colonies.

The location is less than half a mile from base, so it was nice for people heading in to know there was a really good bird back home.
The only new Asian species today was a Far Eastern Curlew that only one group saw.
Shortly thereafter, Cindy Lippincott radioed news that Ron Howard had spotted a Far Eastern Curlew on Puffin Island, which is a very small rocky isle quite close to shore by the Peaceful River mouth.

 Calidris ferruginea
In summer plumage the Curlew Sandpiper is strikingly red, like a small long-billed Knot, and many of the birds seen in Britain in spring or autumn show traces of this.
However, the majority of Curlew Sandpipers seen here are juveniles in autumn which are most similar to Dunlin but are taller, longer-legged, longer-tailed and longer-billed.
Plumage-wise, notice the long white eye stripe, the delicately scaly upperparts and the peachy flush on the breast, all good field marks.

 Beidaihe in autumn cumulative bird list
Beidaihe however was always going to be the focus of this tour and, as if to welcome us, an appealing array of shorebirds including Far Eastern Curlew, Terek Sandpiper, Grey-tailed Tattler and six Great Knot greeted us on our first visit to the Sandflats.
  The extensive tracts of scrub seem to attract and hold far more passerine migrants than any single site closer to Beidaihe while the high tide roost usually provides additional appeal in the shape of a variety of shorebirds and gulls.
Returning to the mainland we stopped to explore a small, isolated coppice not far from the quay.

The afternoon was spent on a whale watching boat with the only birds seen being a few Australasian Gannets, Crested Terns and Silver Gulls — though superb views of at least 4 Humpback Whales and 12 Bottle-nosed Dolphins (from the harbour) made amends.
A search of Red Rock (p.50 in Thomas and Thomas) failed to produce any Beach Thick-knees although Lesser Sandplover and Far Eastern Curlew were present and 2 Little Button-Quail scurried across the road by a scrubby area between the Pacific Highway and Red Rock village.
A couple of Brown Cuckoo-Doves were seen adjacent to the Platypus takeaway store in Eungella village, and a Bassian Ground Thrush fed at close range in the rainforest adjacent to the Broken River area.

 the little twitch
We have asked many people and so far the largest one month total we have heard of is around 1100, which seems a little low.
We spent the heat of the day on a trip out to Green Island, where we had hoped to get a lot of seabirds that you can't get from shore, but this turned out to be a mistake, as we only got a couple of terns and Brown Booby.
As sad as it was, by far the cheapest way to do it was to fly to Australia from Ecuador on the first half of a return ticket (US$1800), then buy the around the world ticket in Australia (US$1900) and fly back to Ecuador on the first portion of this RTW ticket.
