Malaysia is perhaps the best example of a country in which the economic roles and interests of various racial groups have been pragmatically managed in the long-term without significant loss of growth momentum, despite the ongoing presence of inter-ethnic tensions which have occasionally manifested in violence, notably in 1969 (see below).
The economic developments described in the previous section were unevenly located, for example, in Malaya the bulk of the tin mines and rubber estates were located along the west coast of the Peninsula.
New capital investment in rubber had slowed since the 1920s, and the bulk of the existing trees were nearing the end of their economic life.

The death of the Review came by a thousand cuts inflicted primarily by Karen House, the emissary from New York who took over responsibility for the Review two years after Dow Jones, previously a minority shareholder, acquired 100 per cent of the magazine in 1987.
And it is clear that the closure of the Review, as of Asiaweek, represents an attack on diversity and further reduction in the variety of print media.

That was due to a particularly dry year, but it comes on top of a steady draining of underground water: Beijing's population has tripled, its industrial water use has increased by 31 times and its irrigated farmland has grown by 23 times over the past 50 years.
As Beijing's farmers are generally far poorer than their urban cousins, rural water costs only 0.2 renminbi a cubic metre.
The central government is keen to keep farmers in their fields in order to avoid the huge social implications of a rush on the cities, but competition for resources is nevertheless growing as Beijing's urban suburbs expand, making the use of precious water in the fields increasingly irrational.
