 Rockaway
Rockaway was then known as Reckowacky, which meant "the place of our own people", a name that literally was interpreted from "neck of the land".
By 1690 Cornell settled in Far Rockaway with his family on a large homestead that he built near what is now known as Central Avenue, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
During the War of 1812, a block-house was built at the point of the Rockaway peninsula, at approximately Beach 137 street, and manned round the clock by the military of New York City.

Rockaway is split between New York's 9th and 6th Congressional Districts with the 6th encompassing the easternmost portions of the peninsula and the 9th spanning the western end.
Rockaways' Playland, a world renowned amusement park opened in 1901, and was a popular place for New York families until 1985 when insurance costs and competition from major regional parks made it impossible to continue operations.

Far Rockaway trains usually platform on Track 6 at Jamaica as this track provides a straight shot to the Atlantic branch underjump which is located about 200 yards east of the station.
The Far Rockaway line shares this right-of-way with the Long Beach and West Hempstead branches, but the next three stations are served only Far Rockaway trains (although, some Long Beach trains do make these stops, especially on the weekends).
Long Beach branch trains are allowed to continue into the station at regular speed while Far Rockaway trains are given a slow approach which they follow until they are in the station.

Far Rockaway first claimed fame in 1833 for its Marine Pavilion, which attracted the likes of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Washington Irving and other city dwellers fleeing a cholera outbreak.
Far Rockaway was originally part of the town of Hempstead, but joined Queens, which remained with NYC after its three easternmost towns became a new county, Nassau, in 1898.
Today, as far as its street layout is concerned, Far Rockaway has little in common with its gridironed brothers in the five boroughs, and more resembles Nassau County to the east and north and Staten Island with meandering streets and plenty of dead ends.
