Fareham is situated at the north-west tip of Portsmouth Harbour where the River Wallington joins it.
In the 1960's, Fareham experienced a huge amount of development, as it was one of the areas highlighted for major expansion in the South Hampshire Plan.

Fareham was a desirable place for naval officers to live as it was away from the noise, dirt and overcrowding of Portsmouth but was near enough to be within reasonable travelling distance.
Fareham also continued to be a minor port exporting bricks (Fareham reds were used to build the Albert Hall), chimney pots, pottery and clay pipes and importing wine, cloth and coal.

 The Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester - Our Parish History
The records of Catholicism in the Fareham Area prior to 1878 are scarce and unfortunately records prior to 1939 were destroyed in Portsmouth during the Second World War.
Fr James Bellord who was a military Chaplain serving the troops in the neighbouring forts, was one of the first to devote himself to the Catholics of Fareham.
Though the first priest in Fareham, quite possibly was Father Gascoigne, the real founder and first resident priest was Father Thomas Foran, who came to Fareham in 1874 as Chaplain to the troops stationed on Portsdown Hill.
