Farm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
For example, the Amish have frolics which refer to a group of people getting together to do a particular activity--such as house cleaning to prepare for their turn to host the church at their farm--or a frolic for a group of people raising a barn that burned down.
Succession is a part of this process and the parents, through careful observation of their children working on the farm, must somehow select which child will be the one to carry on the farm.
Farms and watersheds are constantly changing and are not in a static balance.

Brave New Farm?, by Jim Mason
The factory farm is one of the more inappropriate technologies of this century: it requires high inputs of capital and energy to carry out a simple, natural process; it causes a costly chain of problems and risks; and it does not in fact produce the results claimed by its proponents.
Some of these farms have 'total-confinement' systems in which the pigs never see the light of day until they go to market; they are conceived, born, weaned, and 'finished' (fattened) in specialized buildings similar to those used in the poultry industries.
On some farms she may share a small pen with other sows, but in the more intensive factories she is restricted to a narrow stall in which she can only stand or lie down.

 OhioLINK ETD: Long, Scot
The unit of analysis is the Amish farm household consisting of a family of three or four generations engaging in an intensive type of agriculture as defined by Netting (1993:28-29).
Although the data collected represents farm labor inputs of individual households within the two separate church districts, the focus of this dissertation is both an examination of how Amish farm families share labor at the household level and an examination of how labor is shared among member households of the community.
The second hypothesis contends that the traditional dichotomy between labor sharing and commodification of labor in Amish society is moving toward greater commodification of labor along with farm intensification, population pressure, and local economic expansion.

 Agricultural/Farm Welfare - or...farming the taxpayers' wallets
The persistence of farm subsidy programs results from the popular misconception that they stabilize the incomes of poor family farmers who are at the mercy of unpredictable weather and crop prices.
Such largesse is a testament to the power of the farm lobby, even though the number of full-time commercial farmers continues to dwindle.
Farm subsidies are not good for either taxpayers or the agriculture industry itself in the long run.
