Topic: Farm to Market Roads

List of Texas highways - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is also a State Highway 495 (renumbered from Farm to Market Road 495), as well as cancelled routes SH 550 (a temporary designation for what is now part of Interstate Highway 30) and SH 824 (a temporary designation for what was later part of SH 24).
One characteristic of the highways in Texas are its frontage roads; most freeways have continuous frontage roads, one-way in urban areas and two-way in rural areas.
Farm to Market (abbreviated FM) and Ranch to Market (abbreviated RM) have equal status as secondary highways.

Texas - FM & RM Roads   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The name is derived from the intended use of the roads: farmers bringing their goods to market in the cities.
The new classification was needed because, with the growth of urbanized areas, these roads now primarily served urban and suburban residents.
Although funds for FM & RM roads were supposed to benefit rural areas, the funds were needed for improvements in urban areas.

The portion of road White wants to add begins at the intersection of State Highway 38 and county road F-58 in Wilton and is located on a road once known as Old Highway 6.
This road later became State Highway 927 and is now segmented in portions identified by one letter and a number.
Road portions located about 2.25 miles east of Wilton and about 5.5 miles east of Durant would be under the jurisdiction of Muscatine County.

Bandera County Road and Bridge Department FMR GASB 34
Some of Bandera County's worst road problems are concentrated in subdivisions that were built prior to the adoption of the current road standards, which now are incorporated in the county's subdivision rules.
County commissioners should identify the subdivisions with the worst roads and most complaints, and then decide whether the proposed improvements are necessary for the public's health, safety and welfare.
Lateral roads usually are county roads, although the term also can be used to denote a "connecting" road built between highways.

The farm-to-market road system includes those county jurisdiction roads providing service for short-distance intracounty and intercounty traffic or providing connections between farm-to-market roads and area service roads, and includes those secondary roads which are federal aid eligible.
The right-of-way for all secondary roads is sixty-six feet in width, unless otherwise specified by the county board of supervisors of the respective counties.
"Road" or "street" means the entire width between property lines through private property or the designated width through public property of every way or place of whatever nature if any part of such way or place is open to the use of the public, as a matter of right, for purposes of vehicular traffic.

The county's eminent domain suit was contested on the ground that the road in question was a county road and the commissioners did not follow the correct procedure for condemning land for county roads.
Thus, the farm-to-market road in Bolin was part of the state highway system for purposes of condemning the right-of-way, but the state was not to pay any of the cost of acquiring the right-of-way.

Texas Monthly April 1983 : The Farm-to-Market Road
A good stretch of farm road is the apotheosis of a very Texan institution—the drive for no other purpose than to get the feel of the country—and that is why the farm-to-market road is to Texas what the freeway is to California: not just a highway but a symbol of the culture.
The law reserves for FM roads 1 cent for every gallon of gasoline sold in Texas—$91.6 million in 1982—plus another $15 million annually, which explains why there is still no four-lane highway between Houston and Austin but there is FM 2688 beginning at U.S. 83 and ending thirteen miles later at Briscoe’s Dimmitt County ranch.
There are more than three thousand FM roads, numbered in order of construction, from 1 to 3440, but mergings of FM roads and upgradings to state highways have left gaps in the sequence: there is no FM 7, for example, or 29, or 42.

A farming system based on irrigation, improved access to credit services and linkages to markets would significantly contribute to increasing farm income and employment opportunities, especially in the Terai region of Nepal.
Under the Project, farming communities are mobilised into strong groups to eventually grow into a powerful support network by managing and sharing local resources and coping with the challenges of the environment.
They are eventually expected to evolve as a self-reliant and financially viable farmers association that would give a voice to poor farmers, increase their bargaining power in the market places and in dealing with local authorities.

FM 1 extended only three miles into the Piney Woods, and the farmer wasn't even the main beneficiary -- the road led to the Temple Lumber Company sawmill at Pineland -- but the prospect of paved roads in the backcountry was enough to stimulate one of the major lobbying campaigns in Texas history.
The farm-to-market road couldn't keep Texas a rural state, but it could keep alive the notion that the soul of Texas still lies Out There, waiting to be discovered.

One of the direct benefits of the DAR-ADB project for the rural people of Altavas is the construction of about 13.41 km of farm-to-market roads that has cut short the travel time of Altavas townsfolk, who walk from their communities to the town proper.
"The new farm-to-market roads have reduced people's travel time from the communities to the town proper by 20 to 40 minutes and the cost of transportation and hauling fees incurred in bringing their produce to the market has been cut down by 30 to 50 percent," Lacsamana said.
Of the total project targets, some 1,265.4 kilometers of farm-to-market roads and 859 public water systems need to be installed; some 5,951 hectares of irrigation facilities remain to be completed.

The proposed construction of the farm-to-market roads was earlier recommended by the Police Regional Office-Cordillera after noting that many farmers there are being lured to planting marijuana due to the inaccessibility of roads.
Arroyo’s pronouncement, Mayor Braulio Yaranon of Baguio expressed strong objection to the flyover construction, saying that BGH rotunda is a part of a watershed basin, and construction of a flyover thereat would result to technical malversation of fund, considering that the area is not a part of Marcos Highway.
