Farmer in the Sky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Farmer In The Sky is a 1950 science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein about a boy who emigrates to Jupiter's moon Ganymede, which is in the process of being terraformed, and who creates a farm out of gravel.
In fact, the "soil" has to be created from scratch by pulverizing rocks and seeding the resulting dust with carefully prepared organic material.
While some predictably whine about the injustice, Bill lands a job with an already-established farmer and his family to learn the ropes, while his father signs on as an engineer in town.

The Farmer of the Year award recognized Ken Coverdell’s presentation at high school career day, his helping hand with homecoming class projects and musicals, and one of his favorite pastimes being the voice of the local football team at home games.
On the Coastside County Water Board since 1992, Coverdell is an active CLCA member, having served as the co-chair of the Chapter Presidents Council and as the treasurer, vice president, president and chairman of the board of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.

Digital Analogue: Farmer in the Sky
I knew that Robert Heinlein had written some YA fiction in his day, and I'd even read some of his novels that I later found out were part of that group.
This is the first one that I pegged as such from the start: Farmer in the Sky is an adventure told from the perspective of a boy about 14 years old.
Aside from reading like a piece of Boy Scout recruiting propaganda, it was a fun read; Bill, the protagonist, gets to adventure out as a pioneer settling on Ganymede, with all of Heinlein's usual attention to the various scientific details of the thing.

 Farmer in the Sky
I am not one for lengthy descriptions, but Heinlein's view of the Ganymedian sky is breathtaking.
Not only did he manage beautifully to bring to life the exotic star dome with a handful of moons gracing the sky, but one wonders how much he had to read to make it that believable.
In keeping with the lessons of history, the colony is almost wiped out when an earth, I mean, ganyquake destroys almost all buildings and, most importantly, the power plant that provides the heat trap.

The settings of the transport ship and the Ganymede facilities resemble a laboratory, and the pioneers refer to their planet-roving expeditions as "experiments." In these laboratories and through these experiments, the unfamiliar surroundings of Ganymede and the familiar habits brought from Earth are intermingled to create a new breed of explorer and settler.

Asian civilization is sometimes treated negatively in his work, as in his 1949 novel Sixth Column, in which the U.S. defends itself against invasion using a ray that only kills people with "asiatic blood;" the topic was pushed on Heinlein by an editor, and he was apparently embarrassed by the story later in his life.
Tunnel in the Sky and Farmer in the Sky both contain negative depictions of overpopulation in Asia.

I've read a letter written by John Campbell (editor of "Astounding Science Fiction") early in the history of science fiction, encouraging his writers to do more "space exploration" stories on the theory that readers needed to get acclimated to the idea that space could be explored before writers could move on to more expansive stories.
Plus, Farmer in the Sky originally appeared in Boy's Life Magazine, the official magazine of the Boy Scouts of America, so you can see how a heavy Scout element might have been called for.

Written in 1950, Farmer in the Sky is one of Heinlein's first boys' books, and also one of the most muscular and optimistic.
He presents his readers with a Ganymede already partially modified to support life from Earth, and makes it all seem plausible--even commonplace (at least within the bounds of late 1940's scientific theory).

In Farmer in the Sky we see people emigrating to other planets to farm because of a food shortage on Earth.

I've read this book many times, as a child and adult, and have never failed to enjoy it for what it is: classic "juvenile" Heinlein.
Whilst "Citizen of the Galaxy" it is not, it is on a par with "Time for the Stars","Farmer in The Sky", "Between Planets" et al in that it epitomises Heinlein's strengths and weaknesses.
On the plus side, originality of vision, a strong plotline, taut driving narrative, interesting minor characters realised with great economy and that overall indefinable feeling of authenticity that made Heinlein's future worlds uniquely real.
