Long Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is the largest island in the continental United States, the most populous island in any U.S. state or territory, and the 17th most populous island in the world, having a larger population than the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the countries of Ireland and Jamaica.
Long Island has a climate that is very similar to other coastal areas of the Northeastern United States; it has warm, humid summers and cold winters, but the Atlantic Ocean helps bring afternoon sea breezes that temper the heat in the warmer months and limit the frequency and severity of thunderstorms.
As of the United States 2000 Census, the total population of all four counties of Long Island was 7,448,618.

Unlike most States, the New York electoral law permits electoral fusion, and New York ballots tend to have, in consequence, a larger number of parties on them, some being permanent minor parties that seek to influence the major parties and others being ephemeral parties formed to give major-party candidates an additional line on the ballot.
As of 2000, New York is the third largest state in population after California and Texas, with a population of 18,976,457.
