Each December a parade is held that honors Farmington native Chester Greenwood, the prolific inventor of the earmuff (he also invented the mechanical mousetrap), who got the idea when he was fifteen years old.

The Farmington area was first settled in 1780 and incorporated in 1794, when Maine was still part of the state of Massachusetts.
It became one of the most agriculturally productive areas in Maine during the mid-1800s, and is still a thriving community and is home to the University of Maine Farmington, one of the oldest centers of higher education in the state.
The Farmington Historical Society was founded in 1961 and houses its collections in the North Church (1873) and the Titcomb House (pictured left, 1846).
